Journeyman Farrier

Job Title: Farrier

Intro and job overview: We are looking for a farrier to join our team at a busy Vet practice on Vancouver Island looking after performance horses across multiple disciplines. Would be providing both routine and specialty shoeing and footcare. Looking for someone who can work independently as needed while also working well on a team. Passionate about horse care and providing exceptional customer service to our clients both two and four legged.

Benefits and pay range: Hourly wage $40/hour plus performance bonus, extended benefits, vacation and opportunity for continuing education and conferences. This is a full-time position consisting of 30 hours of work per week.

Responsibilities and Duties:

- Trim horse hooves using utensils such as rasps and nippers
- Clean hooves and remove excess hoof walls and dead soles
- Observe hooves for signs of disease or poor health as well as lameness problems
- Intervene before a potential problem occurs with a horse’s hooves by alerting veterinary personnel
- Perform basic level of therapy toward horses’ lower limbs
- Fabricate or purchase horseshoes to fit horses, as requested by owner and tailored to the horse’s duties (riding, racing, working, etc.)
- Remove old shoes and replace with new ones Employment requirements
- Minimum 5 years of work experience as a farrier
- Journeyman farrier of Canada, AFA, DipWCF or equivalent
- Exceptional horse handling skills and enjoy working with them
- Good observational skills to spot disease or injury
- Physically fit, including the ability to stand and crouch for many hours
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively and communicate well with others
- Ability to maintain a regular list of clients across the peninsula and to consult on special cases
- Scheduling flexibility, including the ability to work as scheduled

Start date is flexible but prefer to find someone before the end of this year.
