The Vernon Public Art Gallery is a not-for-profit, charitable organization committed to fostering an appreciation of the visual arts for all members of the community.

Mission: The VPAG exists to connect our community to the creative presence and possibilities within the visual arts through its exhibitions and activities.

The Vernon Public Art Gallery is an important part of cultural tourism in the region, and is a centre for educational and cultural activities in the Okanagan. VPAG presentsexhibitions featuring emerging, mid-career and established artists working in a variety of media, including paintings, sculpture, video and installation art. VPAG is the largest public gallery in the North Okanagan and offers approximately 20 exhibitions per year for public viewing. The Gallery also offers an Art Rental Programand Gallery Shop. VPAG delivers programming and events for the community including artist talks, film screenings, workshops, and signature events such as Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts, Riot on the Roofand Art After Dark.

**Primary Duties and Responsibilities**
- Under the supervision of the Curator, the Preparator is responsible for the transportation, storage, installation, de-installation and maintenance of permanent and temporary exhibitions in the Gallery space.
- Oversees the unloading and loading of artwork on transports as required
- Ensures that proper storage of artwork is made available for all artwork received or shipped, including the Permanent Collection
- Undertakes the unpacking and packing of objects and exhibits travelling to or from the institution
- With the curator, inspects received exhibition artwork, prepares condition/damage reports both pre and post-exhibition, and arranges shipping of exhibits
- Prepares gallery spaces for exhibits including permanent and moveable walls, plinths and display cases (removing hanging devices, filling holes, sanding, painting, washing as required)
- Assists the Curatorial team in the installation and de-installation of art exhibits
- Installs appropriate exhibit lighting and display equipment
- Installs signage in galleries
- Assumes responsibility for the general cleaning and upkeep of the displays
- Monitors and maintains hydrothermographs in each gallery; orders graph paper and pen nibs
- Monitors and maintains humidifier to ensure the requirements for art storage are being met
- Monitors Gallery security camera adjustments, locking devices, fire exit lighting, and fire extinguishers
- Performs minor conservation and repairs on support materials when required
- Performs general carpentry including design and construction of display equipment and cases
- Maintains tools and supplies for installation, and lighting of displays
- Maintains order in back storage area ensuring that access to all equipment, files and artwork is permitted
- Maintains the inventory and purchases of light bulbs and fluorescent lighting, paint and paint supplies, and other hardware required for exhibition installation. The Gallery maintains accounts at Fisher Hardware, Mills Paint, and Mara Lumber. Purchases over $200 should be pre-approved by the Executive Director.
- Performs other duties as assigned

**Job Requirements and Qualifications**
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Experience in proper handling of art
- Time management, project planning and problem solving skills
- Ability to operate power and hand tools safely
- Basic carpentry, drywall taping, mudding and painting skills
- First aid; valid driver’s licence and WHMIS training are desirable qualificaitons

**Job Type**: Part-time
Part-time hours: 10 per week

**Salary**: $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 10 per week
