About the Role

At Family Services of Greater Vancouver, we’ve been helping people in crisis since 1928. As a non-profit, we help people develop skills and knowledge, empowering our neighbours to create positive change in their lives. Our team is made up of more than 420 staff, including expert counsellors and support workers who provide compassionate, client-centred care to youth experiencing homelessness, families and children impacted by trauma, victims of domestic violence, and other vulnerable people from an evidence-based, trauma-informed lens. Within Family Preservation and Reunification Services, our **Parenting Programs** serve families with children 0-12 years of age in a supportive learning environment in a group setting. Our various programs promote improved parent-child interactions and focus on strengthening the parent-child relationship.

The Family Preservation Group Counsellor plans, implements and delivers developmentally appropriate parenting programs. This position assists families in strengthening the parent-child relationship by nurturing healthy attachment, modelling practical hands-on parenting skills and facilitating psycho-educational groups. This position helps identify the goals and needs of families and works in collaboration with Family Counselors and Social Workers.

**Work Hours**: Permanent part-time position, 17.5 hours per week. There is flexibility as to when groups are scheduled. However, there is a set parenting program on Thursdays that takes place on-site.

**Salary**: Salary GS 13 Step 1 $1,286.95 bi-weekly

**Location**: 4103 Fraser Street at King Edward

What you bring:
**Education, Training, Experience**
- Master’s degree preferred in Social Work (MSW) or Clinical Counselling (MA) with a minimum of 3 years in a related field or will consider a Bachelor’s degree in a related field with extensive experience

**Knowledge, Skills, Abilities**
- Ability to work with families who may present multiple service needs related to poverty, addictions, violence, child abuse or neglect, intergenerational trauma, and various mental health issues
- Ability to utilize coaching, modelling and behavioural interaction skills in a variety of settings: in the playroom, during parent education groups, and at mealtimes, to promote improved parent-child interaction
- Ability to work with families from diverse cultures and backgrounds
- In-depth knowledge of childhood development, particularly ages 0 - 5
- Knowledge of and ability to coach and model positive parent-child interaction
- Ability to work well in a team and with referring Family Counsellors and Social Workers
- An understanding of integrated case management / wrap-around service delivery
- Knowledge of child welfare policies and practices
- Working knowledge of different parenting strategies and the ability to share these strategies with families
- Knowledge of applicable therapeutic modalities
- In-depth knowledge of child abuse dynamics
- Excellent crisis intervention skills
- Excellent verbal communication skills, both in-person and online, and in presentation
- Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to write reports, etc.
- Computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook and SharePoint

**Additional Requirements**
- Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check
- Proof of Covid-19 vaccination status will be required
