**Position Summary**

Reporting to the Consumer Programs Manager the freelance instructor provides technology instruction on an “as needed” basis to consumers at Canadian Helen Keller Centre.

**Position Responsibilities**

**Provision of Services**
- Conduct comprehensive assessments to determine a consumer’s service needs and identify and prioritize goals through a consumer centred approach
- Develop a technology plan, and work closely in a transdisciplinary team environment to ensure consumer is working successfully towards goals
- Provide 1 on 1 direct service in a learning environment that is beneficial for adults who are deafblind
- Make suggestions and recommendations to improve consumer’s technology needs
- Holds technology workshops, facilitate peer learning related to technology, and consumer information seminars throughout the province of Ontario
- Preparing information in large print, braille and other alternative formats
- Contribution to the CHKC consumer newsletter to inform consumers of relevant technology information
- Form professional relationships with technology vendors
- Keep up to date with the latest technology relating to vision and hearing loss and sharing these findings with the community
- Keep track of relevant technology fairs and other events related to technology for the purpose of attending and gathering relevant information
- May need to work closely with consumer’s family members/guardians to ensure they are familiar with the necessary skills in order to provide consistency and positive reinforcement

**Record Keeping**
- Complete required client documentation including assessments, objectives, progress reports, and any recommendations.
- Diligently record all expenses, ensuring expense reports are provided to Consumer Programs Manager by the deadline.
- Submits hours onthe applicable hour counting website by the deadline.

- Promote and demonstrate CHKC’s mission, vision and values within the workplace and in the community by having a positive and professional relationship with consumers, staff, volunteers, the Board of Directors and other organizations.
- Ensure a high level of communication, including face-to-face, with consumers and staff.
- Respect the privacy and maintain confidentiality of staff and consumers
- Complete all agency required training
- Participate in agency tours and information sessions and engage in public speaking from time-to-time
- Provide reports and articles for web site updates and other awareness materials such as magazines, consumer newsletter, and fundraising materials
- Participate in relevant projects, working groups and committees with the prior approval of Community Programs Manager
- Ensure consistent implementation and adherence to approved CHKC policies and procedures
- Support a positive, respectful, healthy and safe workplace
- All other duties as assigned_

**Skills and Qualifications**
- Certification in applicable Technology programs or comparable experience
- Community College Certificate in American Sign Language is an asset
- Experience working with adults with varying degrees of vision and hearing (blind/visually impaired, hard of hearing/deaf), as well as those with additional disabilities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and strong organization skills
- Ability to describe difficult concepts in a clear easy to understand way.
- Ability to make any information easy understandable taking into consideration the language level of the consumer
- Strong attention to detail, and the ability to work well individually as well as in a team setting
- Requires mínimal supervision, and demonstrates strong ethical behaviours and confidentiality practices
- Familiarity with various modes of communication (ASL, TASL, 2-hand manual, voice over)
- Experience working alongside intervenors and other service providers (PT, OT, PSW, etc.)
- Understanding of accommodations and varying specialized learning needs
- Awareness of the AODA and accessibility features and requirements
