**About the Black Legal Action Centre (BLAC)**

The Black Legal Action Centre (BLAC) is a not-for-profit corporation set up under the laws of Ontario in 2017. BLAC is a legal clinic that provides free legal services primarily to low
- and no
- income Black Ontarians who are facing a legal issue related to anti-Black racism.

**Responsibilities**

**Qualifications**

BLAC is looking for a lawyer with knowledge and experience primarily in the areas of prison, police complaints, as well as human rights (employment, housing, services) and other poverty law areas. The lawyer will be expected to provide advice, brief services, and representation to Black people across the province. The lawyer will also be actively involved in public legal education, law reform, and community development initiatives related to anti-Black racism in education. Applicants should meet the following qualifications:

- Lawyer member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
- Experience providing advice and/or representation in human rights, prison law and police complaints
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice, increasing access to justice, a trauma-informed framework, combatting systemic and anti-Black racism
- Ability to manage a high caseload independently in a high-pressure environment - Demonstrated effective research, oral and written advocacy skills
- Experience with law reform and community development initiatives is an asset
- Ability to deliver legal services in French is an asset
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team

**Compensation and Benefits**

Salary range of $78,000 to $88,400, depending on year of call.

Employer-paid benefits package. This is a one year contract, contingent on funding availability, with the potential for extension or conversion to a permanent position.

We offer a hybrid workplace schedule.
