Dartmouth, Canada Planetary Technology Full time

Planetary Technologies’ vision is to protect and restore the ocean and climate for generations to come. We do this by enhancing the ocean’s natural ability to fight climate change through ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE), leading to carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and storage. Our team combines expertise in ocean science, metallurgy and geochemistry to safely and effectively scale up ocean-based CO2 management solutions. Working collaboratively with all of our stakeholders, we develop a cost effective and sustainable set of tools aimed at protecting and restoring our oceans and climate, ultimately doing carbon dioxide removal and storage at gigatonne scale.

We are leaders, scientists, and engineers working together to collectively embody our values: respect, curiosity & creativity, accept responsibility, and win for all.

Planetary is collaborating with an array of world-leading ocean scientists (including biogeochemical modelers) to develop and scale ongoing OAE projects across the globe, while also evaluating and initiating projects at new sites. Given this exciting time of growth and momentum towards OAE, Planetary is looking to expand our Ocean Modeling Team to advance the state of the art through the development of an OAE modeling toolkit, integrating physical oceanography and biogeochemistry, alongside mineral particle tracking and dissolution.

In this role, you will work with the team at Planetary to support project site selection; help validate our monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) protocol; and bring your first hand knowledge in ocean modeling to accelerate and grow our capacity to remove CO2. These efforts will increase levels of confidence and care both within Planetary, in the broader OAE community, and with other stakeholders.

**Core Responsibilities**
- Assist in developing and refining an OAE modeling toolkit that can be cost effectively applied to assess CO2 removal at project sites - working with internal teams (e.g. Operations, Science) and external teams (e.g. academic / research institutions) to ensure success
- Design, develop, and execute regional coastal models for project sites, validate using ocean observations, including in-house project data
- Develop modeling tools, guidelines, and procedures covering all project stages from site screening to long-term monitoring

**About You**
- A Ph.D in a related field (e.g. physical, biogeochemical, geological oceanography)
- Have hands-on experience with coastal ocean modeling (e.g. building and/or running models using Delft3D, MIKE, NEMO, ROMS, FVCOM, etc.) as well as interpreting and analysing data to produce clear and concise synthesis reports
- Experience with software programs that assess physical and/or chemical fluxes (e.g., CORMIX, CO2SYS, PHREEQC, etc.)
- Have experience measuring and modeling ocean inorganic carbon chemistry, and an understanding of modeling coastal processes
- Have experience with data assimilation techniques
- Prior coding experience (Fortran, Python, Matlab, etc.)
- Passion to learn with and from others in the OAE and ocean communities
- Have an optimistic, persistent and driven working style, pride yourself on responsiveness and are excited about contributing to collective successes
- Always looking to learn new things, curious about climate change mitigation technologies, and passionate about ocean CDR and the measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) challenges
- A self-directed learner, early adopter, and excited about influencing the state of the art in relation to ocean modeling, ocean-based CDR, and OAE.
