**Summary**:
The Family Counsellor is responsible for case management and providing outreach support to children and
their families referred by the Ministry for Children and Families. This position will require the use of one’s
vehicle to work with clients at a variety of locations.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:
Assist families to respond to crisis and provide strength-based outreach counselling.
Assist families to be proactive in order to respond to the child/youth in their care
Work collaboratively with the persons served to provide case management and risk assessment, goal
setting, planning, outreach counselling, closure and where appropriate, follow up.
Participate with other team members including parents, Social Workers and other professionals in
Care Team meetings.
Maintain documentation and data tracking as required.
Working with families who are referred by MCFD dealing with such issues as poverty, violence, trauma
and other barriers.
Some hours will be dedicated to referrals supporting children aged 10-12 years and their families
Provide services (individual/groups) and/or referrals as requested.

**Qualifications Required**:
Undergraduate degree in Social Work, or a related human services degree.
Experience working with parents, children, families and community professionals.
Minimum 1 year experience working with families on an outreach basis.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Family Counselling and conflict resolution skills
Ability to provide trauma informed approach to supporting individuals and families.
Ability to provide an attachment based approach between children and caregivers.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work well independently and within a team
reduction models.
Organizational skills, including time management, documentation and report writing
Creativity, patience, empathy and flexibility
Group facilitation skills including development and implementation of groups based on needs of
persons served.
Languages other than English are an asset
