**Job Purpose**

As an Addiction and Mental Health Counselor, your primary purpose in this role is to play a crucial part in guiding individuals grappling with substance abuse problems and related mental health issues through their journey of recovery. By offering regular counseling sessions, you will help equip participants with vital coping skills, resilience, and self-awareness that are integral to their recovery. You will also provide support to clients as they perform daily self-care tasks and engage in life management activities. The Addiction and Mental Health counselor will create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants.

**Duties and Responsibilities**
- Conduct thorough assessments and evaluations of participants to understand their unique challenges, history of substance abuse, mental health conditions, and other factors influencing their current situation.
- Develop individualized treatment plans based on the assessment, setting specific goals and objectives to guide the recovery process effectively.
- Provide regular one-on-one counseling sessions to participants, utilizing evidence-based therapeutic techniques to address their emotional, behavioral, and psychological concerns.
- Facilitate group therapy sessions, where participants can interact with and support each other, promoting peer learning and fostering a sense of community.
- Educate participants about the nature of addiction, mental health disorders, and the process of recovery, helping them understand their conditions and the steps involved in healing.
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, community programs, and support services to refer clients to specialized treatments, medical services, or additional resources that can complement their recovery journey.
- Be prepared to handle crisis situations and provide immediate support to clients facing acute mental health episodes or relapse.
- Conduct workshops and sessions to equip participants with practical life skills, coping mechanisms, and stress management techniques to enhance their ability to navigate daily challenges.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records, documenting progress, treatment plans, interventions, and outcomes in accordance with professional and legal standards.
- Advocate on behalf of participants, ensuring they have access to necessary resources, support, and fair treatment within the healthcare system and the community.
- Encourage and support participants in establishing healthy self-care routines, including exercise, nutrition, and mindfulness practices, to promote overall well-being.
- Show sensitivity to diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives, respecting and understanding the impact of culture on participants experiences and healing processes.

**Qualifications**

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
- Enthusiastic and dynamic presenting skills
- Excellent time management with strong organizational and problem-solving skills
- Self-motivated and results oriented
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook

**Education and Experience**
- A bachelor's degree in psychology, counseling. Master's degree in counseling, marriage and family therapy, or clinical psychology is an asset.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in addiction and mental health support
- Familiarity with issues of poverty, homelessness, and Edmonton’s urban core
- Familiarity with Indigenous culture and history is and asset.
