**Main Purpose and Function**

The Kitchen Volunteer Leader (Food Production) is a hands-on food production role that includes responsibility for providing support, instruction, skills development, and supervision to Centre volunteers and junior staff assisting with food preparations. Kitchen Volunteer Leader (KVL) is responsible for the day-to-day execution of cooking and producing full meals for as many as 170 persons, using very few convenience items. The KVL is responsible for ensuring that all food operations are efficient, well organized, and meet food-safe standards. The KVL will also support the food concession operations by providing assistance to the Cashier/Kitchen Attendants; stocking and cleaning the concession; serving customers; and operating the cash register as needed. The position reports to the Food Services Coordinator and Kitchen Program Assistant.

**Specific Duties and Responsibilities**
- Plan, prepare and produce food in large quantities (up to 170 servings per meal) using industrial kitchen equipment with adherence to nutritional guidelines and food safe standards.
- Safely store and manage leftover food.
- Prepare large quantity cooking and baking using very few convenience items.
- Manage and use moderately heavy orders of supplies as needed, including bending, reaching, stirring, and lifting up to 25 lbs at a time.
- Maintain and balance daily cash accounts.
- Train and mentor a diverse group of staff and volunteers in food preparation, food safety, dishwashing, customer services, and other key skills required in the kitchen including teamwork and conflict resolution.
- Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

**Qualifications**
Education and Experience:

- Completion of Grade 10 (Grade 12 desirable) and completion of courses in food preparation, plus some related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- A Food Safe Certificate is a requirement.
- A Standard First Aid Certificate is an asset.
- Red Seal Chef Certification would be an asset.
- Experience training others or working with volunteers would be an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Working knowledge of methods and techniques of food preparation and storage, care and use of modern equipment is required.
- Knowledgeable in the nutritional value of foods, possess skills in large quantity cooking and baking, have a thorough knowledge of ethnic and vegetarian cuisine.
- Able to prioritize and manage various complex tasks at once.
- Able to communicate effectively with coworkers, volunteers, and the public, and manage conflict situations.
- Able to lift and move moderately heavy orders of supplies.
- Able to maintain cash accounts and write simple reports.
- Experience training, mentoring, and working alongside others, including a varied group of volunteers from all backgrounds and abilities is an asset.
- Experience working with people with mental illness, addictions, or disabilities is an asset.
- Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, establish and maintain effective working relations, and contribute to a positive and supportive working environment.
- Able to perform simple arithmetical calculations.
- Basic computer knowledge, including MS Word, Excel and Outlook.

Driver’s License and Record Checks:

- A Police Record Check is a requirement of this position. A clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions related to this position.

The City’s COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination against COVID-19 is not required at this time. However, should circumstances change and the City deem it necessary to re-introduce such policy, you may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible to continue performing your duties.
