The Dental Hygiene Program in the School of Dentistry is proud to be situated at the University of Alberta in the Kaye Edmonton Clinic Oral Health Clinic, with community partners around Edmonton and its surrounding areas and across Alberta.

**Position Summary**

The initial assignment for this position will be appointed as the Dental Hygiene (DH) External Community Coordinator (ECC). The incumbent participates as an integral member of the Dental Hygiene Clinical Team in the Dental Hygiene Program, ensuring that clinical and other learning experiences for students in the community are progressive, dynamic and aligned with the Entry to Practice Canadian Competencies for Dental Hygienists. The DH External Community Coordinator oversees clinical experiences and other rotations at sites external to the Oral Health Clinic, builds relationships with community partners, and working with the Program Director and Clinical Team, explores new opportunities for students in community settings. Teaching responsibilities include didactic and clinical teaching in the Dental Hygiene Program. The External Community Coordinator is allocated time for research initiatives with priority given to community-based research to align with this role in the School of Dentistry.

This position is designated as a twelve-month, 0.8 FTE with the option to increase to 1.0 FTE to accommodate clinical provision of dental hygiene services within the Oral Health Clinic.

**Duties**

**A. Administration**
- Coordinate scheduling and external partner communication with Clinical Year Coordinators
- Collaborate with Clinical Year Coordinators to monitor student clinical progress throughout the year.
- Participate in regular meetings with DH Clinical Team to review student progress, course expectations and other pertinent matters for the course.
- Oversee and manage patient and risk management issues regarding complaints from their patients.
- Assist in preparing documentation about external clinical education for accreditation reporting.
- In conjunction with Clinical Year Coordinators, develop the student schedule for external rotations and provide the information to the Student & Academic Services (SAS) team for upload into the Scheduling System to create individual external schedules.
- Sit on various committees and subcommittees as needed.

**B. Teaching**
- Provide didactic teaching and related responsibilities.
- Provide didactic teaching that will primarily focus on content aligned with community-based care, advocacy, continuing care, and preparation for practice.
- Provide clinical instruction, feedback and evaluation for students in community-based settings, as well as in the Oral Health Clinic as scheduled.
- Ensure students have opportunities to complete a range of clinical and other related community-based learning experiences, relative to the year of the program.
- Ensure evaluation activities at external placements are appropriately aligned and progressive to support continued learning across the curriculum.
