THE OPPORTUNITY

The Youth Support Worker acts as a positive role model and establishes meaningful and professional relationships with youth accessing City programs and services. The position supports connections for youth to community services, and supports the planning and delivery of socially oriented programming to build and strengthen youth resiliency. The Youth Support Worker is directly supervised by the Recreation & Active Living Program Specialist but receives enhanced support through the Community Social Development Department.
This is a casual seasonal position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide Social Support
- Act as a safe and trusted conduit for youth with a diverse range of needs, which can include difficulties in meeting basic needs and/or involve complex social issues, in accessing community and social services from a strength-based and solution-focused approach
- Contribute to a positive environment for youth by supporting skill development through individual and/or group coaching in the areas of self-advocacy, timely and healthy resolution of conflict, effective negotiation, and accessing supports.
- Use sound judgment to analyze circumstances and recognize potential crisis or imminent safety-related situations. Utilize non-violent crisis intervention skills as appropriate, while following relevant City policy and procedures related to safety.

Provide Mentorship and Positive Role Modeling for Youth
- Build positive and meaningful relationships with program participants
- Role-model healthy communication, including use of respectful and professional communication (both written and verbal), conflict-resolution, and other relevant life-skills to support youth well-being and resilience.

Program Planning
- Understand needs of youth and service gaps in consideration of current available resources
- Participate in the development and implementation of strategic and long-term planning activities to ensure youth programs alignment with broader social initiatives and trends, eliminate duplication, and identify gaps in services.
- Work collaboratively and ensure partnerships are leveraged with other City staff and departments, to support the effective coordination and delivery of programs and services.
- Work in partnership to support community-led goals regarding recreation, sport, art, culture, and event opportunities in a regional context.
- Collaborate with external community partners, represent the City on community initiatives and committees relative to youth to build capacity and quality of programming.

Program Delivery
- Engage and mentor youth through effective and purposeful facilitation, group activities, and individual relationship building.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Enrollment in post-secondary studies with at least two years completed with a focus on human services or social work is required.
- Minimum two years’ experience working with youth in a mentorship role Basic knowledge of the benefits and principles of arts, culture, recreation, physical literacy, and/or fundamental movement skills.
- Standard First Aid, CPR C and AED
- Mental Health First Aid Certificate
- Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (A.S.I.S.T.)
- De-escalating Potentially Violent Situations training
- Working practice knowledge related to relevant legislation such as Child, Youth, & Family Enhancement Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Health Information Act, Alberta College of Social Workers Standards of Practice (as applicable)
- Knowledge in the principles of inclusion and diversity, including but not limited to, LGTBQ+, First Nations, special needs.
- Knowledge of program development and delivery.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- First Aid Certification
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check
- Class 5 Drivers License
