**OVERVIEW**
The Communications Associate is involved in drafting and disseminating internal and external communications in all forms as well as for all scales of projects. This includes social media, print, television, and radio presentation preparedness, strategic messaging in response to incidents and issues, communications, and public relations advice to managers and staff while promoting the Delta Police Department internally and externally as appropriate. This position also includes the development of material for use in communications, including basic photography, video, audio, and digital design.

The Communications Associate reports directly to the Public Affairs Manager, a division of the Office of the Chief Constable.

Due to the nature of special events, some work-hour flexibility is required, based on availability.

**NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK**
The Communications Associate will work in support of the Public Affairs Manager on nine core functions. Research, development, and dissemination of communication-focused content are central to these nine functions. Public trust and internal employee trust and morale drive these priorities:

- Graphics and Publications
- Photography
- Videography and video editing/publication
- Podcast Production

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Develops, coordinates and executes communication and social media engagement plans, activities, programs and initiatives to support Delta Police;
- Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of communications activities in terms of meeting organizational objectives;
- Collaborates on the creation of media releases, backgrounders, advisories and other communications products, and on administrative matters related to the work;
- Prepares and schedules content on a variety of social media channels, responds to requests from the public and moderates content, analyses the impact and reach of social media;
- Monitors and analyses internal and external events, trends and initiatives to identify concerns and opportunities;
- Assists in coordinating press conferences, town halls and other public events;
- Video, audio, and still photography production for internal and external use;
- Design and production of print materials, such as the DPD’s Annual Report, Strategic Plan, and other documents;
- Overseeing and maintaining website content;
- Produce and manage graphic work for signage, branding, leaflets, resource cards, etc;
- Assist in planning and coordinating special events, organizing facilities, and other logistics for special events; and
- Perform related work as required.

**REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES**
- Thorough knowledge and experience of the principles, objectives, methods and techniques in communications and public relations work;
- Experience creating communication strategies, plans, communication materials and social media content;
- Knowledge and experience of the principles, methods and techniques of photography, videography, and audio editing;
- Knowledge and experience of graphic art and design principles, methods, techniques, materials and tools;
- Knowledge and experience of social media platforms, social media analytics and online marketing;
- Knowledge and experience in coordinating the production and dissemination of marketing materials;
- Knowledge of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act;
- Ability to recognize political and other sensitivities and to identify potentially contentious or controversial issues, and bring these to the attention of a manager;
- Ability to develop and implement concepts and themes and to research, write, produce and disseminate a variety of promotional, informational and publicity material;
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
- Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a fast-paced environment;
- Maintain confidentiality in relation to sensitive information.

**DESIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE**
- Post-secondary education in the field of communications, journalism, or marketing; and
- Minimum five years of experience in public relations and/or strategic communications, preferably in a government, law enforcement or mainstream media environment.

**REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND REGISTRATIONS**
- Must possess a valid, unrestricted Class 5 British Columbia driver’s license; and
- Must be able to obtain and maintain Delta Police Department Enhanced Security Clearance throughout employment.
