The Environmental Health Unit is a dynamic part of Manitoba's population and public health team. The Environmental Health team leads public health's policy, planning and operational activities on a range of environmental and social public health issues that support the health and well-being of Manitobans. Key activities include environmental health policy development, risk assessment, food protection, education, and regulatory frameworks and enforcement activities undertaken by public health inspectors.
Conditions of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must possess and maintain a valid Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada) by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors
- Eligible for appointment of Director of Food Protection by the minister of Health under The Public Health Act
- Must provide and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check
- Must maintain a valid Class 5 Driver's licence
- Occasional travel within the province and nationally, including potential overnight stays
Qualifications:
**Essential**:
- Post-secondary education with undergraduate degree in public administration, sciences, environmental health from a recognized institution and/or an acceptable equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Extensive knowledge / experience of public health inspections, public health, population health and environmental health.
- Proven ability as a leader with a commitment to create, support and sustain a diverse environment that enables staff to achieve results and to develop for the future.
- Demonstrated ability to leverage opportunities for innovation, find creative solutions to issues, and successfully manage change.
- Management experience with responsibility for human and financial resources.
- Experience translating strategic priorities into clear operational and business plans.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with experience managing internal and external stakeholder relationships.
- Experience providing strategic advice to senior leaders on complex topics and sensitive issues.
- Experience providing leadership and direction in the design, implementation and/or enforcement of legislation, policies and programs.
**Desired**:
- Experience building relationships with Indigenous Peoples and implementing the principles of reconciliation.
**Duties**:
As a member of the population and public health management team, the Director is responsible to lead and manage the Environmental Health team, including the direct service component of the public health inspection program and provide advice and support to the Executive Director, Assistant Deputy Minister and Medical Officers of Health. The Director is responsible for the coordination of policy development, program direction and compliance management of legislation under the Public Health Act.
