Municipal Planner

**Job Purpose/Mandate**

Working in conjunction with the Municipal, Land Use Planning & Development Department lawyers, law clerks and legal assistants, the Municipal Planner will assist in ensuring a positive and high level of client service at all times.

This role is primarily an in-office position and the Planner will need to be able to comfortably commute to both the Etobicoke office and Vaughan.

**Responsibilities**

1) Due Diligence in Real Estate matters
- Discerning development potential
- Providing opinions respecting developability and opinions to support financings

2) Support for Expropriation Matters
- Determining the highest and best use
- Support for litigation (see detailed description under “OLT Litigation Support” below)

3) Development Application for developer clients
- Assessing likelihood of success
- Quarterbacking the retention of consulting team
- Regular reporting to client
- Municipal research
- Preparation and attendance at public meetings
- Deputations to council or C of A
- Drafting correspondence and speaking notes for solicitor presentations to council
- Advising on appeals of council/committee decisions
- Monitoring council agendas for relevant matters affecting clients

4) OLT Litigation Support
- Support for assessing whether to appeal
- Preparation of appeal materials
- Preparation of originating process
- Correspondence with client
- Preparation of witness statements
- Preparation of affidavits, motion materials, draft OLT orders and other litigation documentation
- Preparation of document books
- Preparation of evidence outlines
- Preparation of planning instruments
- Document management.

5) Municipal Client Assistance
- Research
- Helping internal planning departments with overflow work
- Helping draft solicitors reports to council
- Assisting with drafting agreements

6) Continuing Education for Lawyers and clients
- Preparing materials
- Undertaking research
- Lecturing

**Qualifications & Skills**
- 5+ years of experience with land use planning, redesignations, subdivision and development permitting in the Ontario
- Knowledge of municipal governance structures, land use planning and development processes
- Experience with reviewing Request for Proposals and writing comprehensive competitive proposals
- Demonstrated strength in managing projects and meeting deliverables on time and within budget
- Familiarity with GIS and database systems is considered an asset
- Proven interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills; ability to maintain professional working relationships and present ideas in a business-friendly manner

**Job Types**: Full-time, Permanent

**Salary**: $48,006.50-$103,704.82 per year
