The following standards define the performance requirements that must be satisfactorily maintained by all Health Care Attendants.

The Health Care Attendant:
1. Safety

Demonstrates and promotes safety by:
1.1 Practising principles of mechanical, electrical, chemical and thermal safety and accident prevention.

1.2 Using principles of body mechanics and following Safe Resident Handling and Movement protocol, including the use of sliders.

1.3 Implementing responsibilities utilizing:
a) the fire plan and equipment

b) the disaster plan

c) the paging codes

d) W.H.M.I.S.

1.4 Answering residents’ lights promptly.

1.5 Using restraints as per Luther Home policy.

1.7 Requesting guidance and help when necessary.

1.9 Remaining calm and initiating appropriate interventions during emergencies and other stressful situations.

2. Attendance & Punctuality

Displays a sense of responsibility by:
1.10 Using sick time appropriately.

1.11 Reporting to work punctually.

3. Quality of Work: Demonstrates quality by:
3.1 Recognizing and reporting changes or potential changes in resident’s health status in a time appropriate manner.

3.2 Establishing priorities based on resident care needs.

3.3 Providing complete and appropriate care when:
3.3.1 ambulating residents,

3.3.2 maintaining body alignment and support,

3.3.3 planning care to provide for rest, relaxation and sleep,

3.3.4 giving or assisting resident with bed bath, tub bath, whirlpool bath or shower,

3.3.5 shaving male residents,

3.3.6 providing and observing skin and oral hygiene,

3.3.7 caring for hair and nails,

3.3.8 making beds and keeping unit neat and tidy,

3.3.9 serving water, juices and between meal nourishments to residents,

3.3.10 serving and returning meal trays,

3.3.11 feeding residents,

3.3.12 communicate oral intake to the nurse,

3.3.13 providing for normal elimination,

3.3.14 communicate output to the nurse

3.3.15 collecting routine specimens (ie. stool and urine),

3.3.16 observing and reporting any elimination problems,

3.3.17 weighing residents, following Weighing of the Resident policy,

3.3.18 assisting with the care of a dying resident and care of the body after death.

3.4 Performing other assigned duties completely and correctly:
3.4.1 washing wheelchairs, geriatric chairs,

3.4.2 ensuring tidiness of utility rooms, kitchens, cupboard and bathroom,

3.4.3 taking dirty linen hamper to laundry,

3.4.4 transporting residents to other departments in Luther Home,

3.4.5 others as may be assigned.

3.5 Creating and/or maintaining a therapeutic approach by:
3.5.1 respecting residents’ rights and concerns,

3.5.2 providing privacy and maintaining confidentiality,

3.5.3 establishing a caring, helping relationship,

3.5.4 advocating for residents.

3.6 Performing care as directed by the Resident Care Plan.

4. Quantity of Work: Demonstrates quantity by:
4.1 Priorizing and organizing nursing care, based on resident needs,

4.2 Completing work assigned in a consistent manner,

4.3 Demonstrating reliability by completing a quantity of work comparable to the work performed by his/her peers.

5. Job Knowledge: Ensures satisfactory job knowledge by:
5.1 Demonstrating knowledge and understanding of the Resident Care Philosophy,

5.2 Is aware and respects, promotes and complies with the Resident Bill of Rights and Responsibilities,

5.3 Attending job related in services, for continued learning and review,

5.4 Attending mandatory in services as required,

5.5 Demonstrating knowledge of the content and direction contained in policies and procedures applicable to job performance,

5.6 Attending 24 hour report, staff meetings, both general and HCA specific,

5.7 Reading self-study programs and directives appropriate to his/her position,

5.8 Demonstrating awareness of the routine of the unit.

6. Initiative: Demonstrates initiative by:
6.1 Assisting others to complete tasks,

6.2 Using spare time effectively for the benefit of resident care,

6.3 Seeking instruction if workload is complete,

6.4 Identifying quality improvement opportunities that facilitate excellence in resident care.

7. Dependability/Accountability: Demonstrates dependability by:
7.1 Reporting significant workplace related observations in a time appropriate manner,

7.2 Participating in the orientation of new Health Care Attendants and student Health Care Attendants,

7.3 Participates in 360 evaluation of other staff as requested,

7.5 Assisting team mates once his/her work assignment is completed,

7.6 Reporting difficulties in completing work assignments in a time appropriate manner,

7.7 Accepting accountability for his/her actions, or lack of action.

8. Fitness: Demonstrates a physical and mental ability to satisfactorily perform essential job duties by:
8.1 Maintaining the needed flexibility, strength, stamina and emotional ability to perform the job requirements,

8.2 Meeting the demands of the job in a consistent manner,
