**Position Overview**

The Reference Librarian is responsible for in-depth reference services for

Saskatoon Public Library (SPL) at the central library.

The Reference Librarian coordinates public reference questions, including, but not limited to, virtual reference, readers’ advisory, technology questions, and research in special collections. This position is responsible for responding to elevated and complex reference inquiries referred to the Reference

Librarian from other SPL employees. The Reference Librarian will work with the Senior Manager and relevant employees to assess and evaluate current service levels in reference, make recommendations for improvements, develop, and implement new reference services as part of a team.

This position is responsible for assisting in the development of and providing training for employees and the public relating to physical library collections, digital library collections, special collections, virtual subscriptions, and other relevant available resources, including the use of technology.

The Reference Librarian ensures all services are reflective of the diverse and unique needs of the community that support literacy, reference/readers’ advisory, and technology services.

This position is responsible for resolving patron concerns in accordance with

SPL’s established guidelines. This position is accountable for ensuring compliance with SPL’s policies and procedures. This position participates on assigned teams and committees and will have the opportunity to participate in the system-wide planning of services, programs and other projects.

The Reference Librarian may be required to assume temporary operational oversight of the Borrower & Information Services work unit in the absence of the Senior Manager, Borrower & Information Services.

**Key Duties**

1. **Reference & readers' advisory**: Work on the floor or desk at the main library answering directional, reference, readers' advisory questions as they arise in person or by phone, or are elevated to this position.

2. **System services at central library**: Take a leadership role in planning, developing and implementing system or specialized services operating out of the central library. System support for these services at the central branch.

4. **Technology help**: Working with the public on computers, assistive technologies, mobile devices, scanners, copiers and printers, and other forms of technology.

5. **Tours & training**: Planning for and conducting tours or trainings for community groups, classes or other members of the public. Could also refer to tours or training of employees when necessary. Tours and training may run by other employees at SPL or as part of working groups.

6. **Outreach**: Planning and participating in library programs and events in the community.

**Qualifications**
- Masters of Library Science or Masters of Library and Information

Science Degree from an ALA-accredited program.
- Minimum of one year experience within the past five years working with the public in customer service or reference.
- Demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities in the stated accountabilities and competencies.
- Ability to travel independently to and between SPL activities and locations as needed.
- A current, acceptable Criminal Record Check.
- A current, acceptable Vulnerable Sector Search.
