**Job Summary**
- The Faculty of Engineering at Dalhousie University provides an opportunity to be part of an excellent engineering school in a leading, research-intensive Canadian University. Reporting to the Manager of Safety & Operations, the Light Prototyping Shop Supervisor will oversee all activities within the Faculty’s Light Prototyping Shop.
The Light Prototyping Shop is a woodshop where engineering students learn how to safely use woodworking tools to create their designs. Equipment includes drill presses, vertical band saws, belt sanders, a CNC router and a wide selection of hand tools. For a tour of the shop please check out:

**Key Responsibilities**
- Supervise activities and oversee the safety of all students, faculty and staff operating in the Light Prototype Shop as well as the 3D print room. Coordinate activities falling outside regular work hours, control shop access, procure consumables as required, and manage consumables budget.
- Train students, faculty, teaching assistants and staff on equipment usage and processes with an emphasis on safe operation. Ensure spaces are kept in operational condition. Inspect and maintain all tools and equipment, coordinating repairs and upgrades as needed.
- Train, guide, and oversee large classes throughout the term regarding equipment usage and building design projects. Assist students with the selection and purchase of materials; construction methods; fabrication of parts and prototypes; and managing deadlines related to their shop work.
- Read, interpret, and evaluate specialized parts/drawings/designs, and provides guidance and feedback to correct errors or issues therein, and/or to ensure ease of manufacture. Assist students and instructors in the programming and wiring of introductory micro-controller (Arduino) circuitry.
- Collaborate with faculty and course instructors in the design, development, and construction of new student experiments as required.
- Support Faculty Operations including acting as a back-up for supervision of other workshop-based labs and for the shipping and receiving area. Liaise with other technical and/or professional engineering staff in the development and delivery of safety procedures.

**Note**
The incumbent will be regularly working with a range of construction equipment and materials, and be exposed to dust and noise.
Periods of elevated intensity will occur during peak academic months and/or when faculty deadlines require. The incumbent may be required to work occasionally outside regular working hours, for example during peak academic periods. Scheduling and compensation will be in accordance with the collective agreement.
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.
Dalhousie’s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.

**Required Qualifications**
- Diploma in related field with a minimum of 3-5 years’ relevant experience required (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
- Demonstrated ability in woodworking, 3D printing, equipment maintenance, instructing students, and workplace safety with a proven safety record.
- Excellent supervision skills.
- Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team with proven organizational skills.
- Forklift certification and a valid driver’s license within the first two months of employment.
