The McMaster Platelet Immunology Laboratory (MPIL) performs comprehensive research and diagnostic testing to investigate immune-mediated platelet disorders that lead to increased clotting such as COVID-19 vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT), heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) as well as disorders that involve prolonged bleeding immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). MPIL is the diagnostic center for HIT in Canada and recently also became the Canadian diagnostic center for VITT testing funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). As a result, MPIL has a biobank of several thousand patient samples, which represents a unique opportunity in translational medicine to discover diagnostic markers and disease mechanisms. MPIL is headed by Dr. Ishac Nazy (PhD), the Scientific Director of MPIL and Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences. The overall goal of Dr. Nazy's research program is to investigate immune-mediated platelet disorders while providing a training environment that provides exposure to advanced scientific expertise in the fields of biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology and hematology. MPIL was recently recognized for its excellence by McMaster University and was awarded the President’s Award in 2021. MPIL falls under the newly established Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Transfusion Research.
