Healing Substance Use Case Worker

**The Position**:
In keeping with the mission statement, values and principles of the John Howard Society of Manitoba, The Healing Substance Use Caseworker will work directly with Indigenous men who are struggling with problematic substance use, including the use of opioids.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:
The Healing Substance Use Caseworker will provide culturally based substance use programming that speaks to the Indigenous experiences, helping clients heal from trauma, and recognizing that healing is a life-long process. Provide short-term case management support, including working with clients to meet their basic needs, harm reduction, empowerment, and advocacy.

**Day-to-day responsibilities include, but are not limited to**:

- Interview clients for intake, assessment, and assistance with any program-related concerns.
- Complete individual case plans that promote healing.
- Provide support and supervision to clients while involved in healing plans.
- Provide information and refer clients to community resources, assist clients with problem-solving, and advocate on their behalf.
- Conduct one-to-one sessions when required.
- Follow protocols and procedures as outlined in the program manual.
- Provide case management functions in a timely manner, including keeping up-to-date records, statistics, and files on clients.
- Complete interim and year-end funding reports as required.
- Develop program material and facilitate open and closed group sessions.
- Develop tools for tracking participant progress, case management, and reporting.
- Network with collaterals for participant recruitment.

**Qualifications**:

- Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with individuals who have been involved in the criminal justice system.
- Ability to develop and maintain ongoing professional relationships with community collaterals.
- Ability to adapt to new concepts, techniques, and best practices.
- Work effectively as part of a team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.

**Education**:

- Post secondary education in the social services field.

**Experience**:

- Experience in case management, program development, and facilitation of group programming.
- Experience working with Indigenous men and Indigenous Elders.
- Experience in working with those who are in conflict with the law.
- Experience in report writing and dealing with collateral agencies.
- Experience working with persons who have addictions, mental health, learning, and intellectual challenges an asset.

**Knowledge**:

- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Thorough knowledge of Indigenous culture and customs.
- Knowledge of substance use treatment models, including the harm reduction model.
- Sound understanding of trauma and its impact.
- Excellent knowledge of community supports.

**Abilities**:

- Demonstrated skills and abilities in proactive and peaceful conflict resolution.
- High degree of self-motivation with judicious decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to practice appropriate boundaries and professionalism

**In addition to the above, this position requires the following**:

- Valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification.
- Able to qualify for Enhance Security Clearance with Correctional Service Canada
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

**Reporting Relationship**:

- This position reports to the Executive Director

**Must have before applying**:

- An up-to-date (within 6 months) criminal record check from Winnipeg Police Service.
- An up-to-date (within 6 months) Adult Abuse Registry clearance.
- Fingerprint criminal record check from Winnipeg Police Service.
