Building and maintaining our provincial infrastructure is no small job. We are recruiting for an Architectural Assistant 1-2 (Specification Writer) to help our province achieve big things

The Building Design Group at the Department of Public Works supports Nova Scotia buildings and infrastructure assets across a wide range of clients. We maintain and support various government buildings including museums, political core buildings, office buildings, and justice centres.

**About Our Opportunity**:
Under the general direction of the Manager, Program Management Office (PMO), the Specification Writer (Technologist) - is responsible for creating, managing, and maintaining the Contract Specifications for the Building Infrastructure Design and Construction Division. This involves creating templates of bid documents for use by all sections. It includes coordination with all team leads on the tendering of construction services as well as equipment tenders.

**Primary Accountabilities**:
This position is responsible for maintaining the construction contract divisions of technical specifications for all forms of project delivery, design-bid-build, design-build, and construction management. Additionally, this position may be responsible to create architectural technical specifications for projects which are designed in house. This position reviews contract documents before they go out to tender to ensure that the documents are tender ready. This position coordinates with external consultants and suppliers as well as internal team leads and Procurement on all tendered projects. This position chairs a committee tasked with reviewing construction contract documents. This position also chairs the Design Standards Review Committee. This position is responsible for managing the Architectural Technical Library and coordinating with external suppliers and manufacturers including arranging information sessions on various products and equipment. This position may on occasion, when time allows, manage technical design projects such as roofing or window replacements.

**Qualifications and Experience**:
You must:

- Have experience creating and maintaining high standards in specification and contract documents, and be a Certified Technician, member of a Canadian recognized Technician Association or qualify for certification by a Canadian Technical Association,
- Have extensive understanding of building systems and components and have experience using the National Master Specification format, (NMS) and RS Means construction cost estimating,
- Have experience working with skilled Trades People, Construction Supervisors and Project Managers, and Architectural and Engineering Consultants,
- Thrive in an environment with competing priorities, and challenging deadlines and have expertise in PC based MS Suite including Word, Outlook, Excel and MS Teams.
- Have experience working with specification front end and building construction contracts and have an excellent attention to detail in written construction contract documents,
- Have a basic knowledge of financial budgets and project management principles and have general experience and understanding of architectural, mechanical, electrical, and civil design and construction.
- Have a general knowledge of the Nova Scotia and Canadian Building Codes as well as typical Architectural design standards and details,
- Have good experience working with staff using a Collaborative Team Approach to achieve results within tight timeframes and have used proactive planning and scheduling tools with good written and oral skills to manage a portfolio of concurrent projects and deadlines.

**Equivalency**:
An equivalent combination of training, education and experience will be considered. Equivalencies include, but are not limited to:

- Completion of a Bachelor of Engineering and 2 years of related experience
