Community Food Animator

**JOB PURPOSE**
The Community Food Animator at BGCES plays a vital role in promoting sustainable food practices within our community. This dynamic individual will oversee our facility gardens, collaborate with local partners, and engage in interactive workshops with youth. Their focus areas include gardening, composting, and environmental education.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**
**Administration (50%)**
**Facility Garden Oversight**:
Manage and maintain our facility gardens, ensuring they thrive and produce fresh, organic produce.
Coordinate planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting activities.
Collaborate with volunteers and participants to create a vibrant garden space.
**Community Liaison**:
Establish and nurture relationships with local partners, schools, and community organizations.
Act as a bridge between BGCES and other initiatives, fostering collaboration and shared resources.
Attend community meetings and events to promote our food-related programs.
**Workshop Facilitation**:
Design and lead interactive workshops for youth, emphasizing gardening techniques and composting practices.
Engage participants in hands-on activities, such as planting seeds, tending to plants, and composting organic waste.
Foster a sense of curiosity and environmental stewardship among workshop attendees.
**Documentation and Evaluation**:
Maintain accurate records of garden activities, workshop attendance, and outcomes.
Evaluate the impact of our programs on participants’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
Use data to continuously improve our offerings and measure success.
**Environmental Education**:
Educate participants about the benefits of composting, soil health, and sustainable food systems.
Raise awareness about reducing food waste and its positive impact on the environment.
Empower community members to make informed choices related to food and gardening.
**Training and Development**:
Create a comprehensive week-long training program before starting employment.
Stay updated on best practices in gardening, composting, and community engagement.
**Program and Supervision (40%)**
- Supervisor each site to ensure that all requirements by the funders and our agency are being met
- Ensure that there are enough staff at each site daily.
- Cover for understaff programs.
- Making sure the sites have equipment’s and activities that are engaging for the children.
- Other duties as assigned.
**A. QUALIFICATIONS**
**Experience and Training/Education**
- 5 years of experience supervisor experience, leading a group of staff.
- Passion for community building, food security, and environmental sustainability.
- Experience in gardening, composting, or related fields.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups.
- Must have strong written and oral communication
- Development of program planning and facilitation skills
- Experience in supervision of staff
- Individuals who are enthusiastic and energetic
- Genuine interest in working with youth
- Demonstrate ability to work well with youth community members
- Ability to communicate effectively with community partners
- Ability to provide support and instructions to others
- Demonstrate time management skills
- Demonstrate an understanding of anti-bias philosophy
- Legally eligible to work in Canada
- Second language an asset

**C. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS**
- Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, making visual inspections, lifting and/or carrying up to 30 lbs., pushing and/or pulling up to 30 lbs., climbing up to 3ft
