Located at the head of Lake Ontario and within the municipalities of Burlington and Hamilton, Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) is the largest botanical garden in Canada and one of the nation’s earliest nature sanctuaries. Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) is seeking an experienced **GIS Technician **for a 12-month contract beginning in late August 2023 with possible longer-term extension.

Position Description

The primary role of the technician will be to establish a standardized base map system for the Cootes to Escarpment EcoPark System area. The GIS Technician will also provide support and expertise in the development of the Cootes to Escarpment EcoPark System’s GIS capabilities and meeting current strategic priorities in support of the local Parks Canada Ecological Corridors Pilot Project including an ArcGIS story map to summarize the project. Some ground truthing of information is expected to be required.

The Cootes to Escarpment EcoPark System is a coalition of nine not-for-profit or government agencies owning and managing approximately 2,000 ha of natural areas at the western end of Lake Ontario, the GIS Technician will oversee the gathering and visualization of relevant EcoPark System partner data layers and the development of a shared database and GeoViewer.

Reporting to the EcoPark System Program Manager and RBGs lead GIS staff person and supported by the EcoPark management committee of the alliance, the GIS Technician will be responsible for collaborating with EcoPark System partner agencies and stakeholders to effectively assemble and deliver the project components of the program noted above. The GIS Technician will have access to GIS software through RBG as the EcoPark System’s implementing partner. The GIS Technician will also be asked to advise the EcoPark System’s management committee on the best software to use for their needs into the future.

**Responsibilities**:

- Designs and edits GIS data sourced from EcoPark System partners and projects to create a consistent set of basic information across the EcoPark System area.
- Ensures alignment of data with company standards.
- Monitors and applies the best industry practices.
- Maintains data integrity and accuracy.
- Utilizes ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, or ArcGIS Online in data visualization.
- Develops sustainable systems of collecting and managing basic data.
- Manages necessary hardware and software.
- Delivers training and technical support to end-users.

**Qualifications**:

- Degree in computer science, geography, surveying, engineering or related field.
- Background in environmental sciences
- 3-5 years experience with ArcGIS.
- GISP certification preferred.
- Proficiency with database programming languages such as SQL, R or Python.
- Proficiency with front end design languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript and various mapping languages.
- Experience with mapping tools such as QGIS and Carto.
- Experience with GPS measuring tools.
- Outstanding quantitative skill set.
- Attention to detail and good problem-solving skills.
- Analytical mindset.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Good interpersonal skills.
