**Early Childhood Assistant**

Casual Supply ECA - $15.50 per hour, plus PWE (as applicable)

**Purpose of Position**

The Early Childhood Assistant is responsible for the care and supervision of children from birth to 5 years of age and for supporting and assisting in the delivery of child care programs based on the philosophies of _Emergent Curriculum_, _ELECT_ and _How Does Learning Happen?_. This is a bargaining unit position.

Located in a purpose built child care centre within a Department of National Defence establishment, the Toronto Military Family Resource Centre provides full time licenced child care services to military and civilian families. We are located in the area of Downsview Park and are easily accessible by public transit with free parking on site.

**Primary Duties and Responsibilities**
- Ensure the health and safety of children aged infant to 5 years through constant, direct supervision and delivery of daily routines (ie. feeding; toilet/diaper routines; transitions)
- Assist in the provision of a high-quality, age appropriate, educational program based on learning outcomes identified by the child care team, through a team based approach
- Maintain a balance of all areas of curriculum ensuring curriculum is free from bias
- Assist in the delivery of a program geared to the needs and interests of each child, considering developmental stage, special needs, and cultural differences
- Guide learning experiences and facilitate an environment that is warm, welcoming and is conducive to learning and exploration
- Practice and demonstrate honesty, kindness, enjoyment, humor, understanding, self-confidence, patience and calmness in interactions with children, parents and colleagues
- Model appropriate behaviours and experiences for children
- Ensure consistent and effective modes of discipline are being followed which are aligned with the centre’s Program Statement and Behaviour Guidance Procedure
- Observe and record children’s daily activities and interactions
- Work collaboratively with centre team members and other professionals to support children with special needs
- Comply with all policies and procedures as set out by the Toronto MFRC, and as required under the _Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014_
- Maintain awareness of new research and best practices in the field of Early Childhood Education and be willing to attend professional development opportunities when offered

**Targeted Knowledge, Skills and Experience**
- 2 years of experience in providing care and supervision, and/or delivering programs to children under age 6; and/or currently enrolled in a recognized Early Childhood Education degree or diploma program
- Awareness of responsibilities under the Child Care and Early Years Act
- Awareness of the philosophies of _Emergent Curriculum_, _ELECT_ and _How Does Learning Happen?_, as well as the _City of Toronto’s Assessment for Quality Improvement Program_
- Awareness of the _Toronto Red Flags Guide _for working with young children
- Familiarity with public health measures applicable to child care centres
- An understanding of, or willingness to learn about, the unique nature of the military family community including an understanding of how the challenges of the military lifestyle may impact the behaviour of children
- Be motivated, creative, flexible, demonstrate initiative and work well as a team member
- Excellent English written and verbal communication skills
- Flexibility and availability for variety of shifts

**Required Qualifications**
- Standard First Aid and Child CPR certification
- Ability to provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Screening
- Ability to provide three references who can speak to your performance in the role of providing care and supervision, and/or delivering programs to children under age 6
- Proof of vaccinations and negative Tuberculosis screening as required by local public health authority

**Working Conditions**
- Required to work as a collaborative member in a team environment
- Required to guide and participate in, indoor and outdoor physical activities with young children, during all seasons
- Physical conditioning necessary to interact with and maintain appropriate supervision of children at all times, in a variety of settings
- Required to be able to push/pull 3 seat stroller and bend/lift children up to approximately 50lbs
- Centre Hours: Shifts are 8 hours in length (less breaks) and may be scheduled between 7:00am and 6:00pm
