Pay Range: $69,948 - $88,272 per annum

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY

The Liability Specialist is responsible for adjusting a wide variety of complex claims relating to damage of various structures, equipment, business interruption losses, and liability claims involving injury to persons and damage to property. Work is performed away from established headquarters when required.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Claims Administration & Adjusting- Adjusts claims relating to damage of various structures, equipment, business interruption losses, and liability claims involving injury to persons and damage to property.- Interviews customers taking initial reports of claims and collecting all pertinent loss information.- Sets up claim files, determines cause of loss, established, and adjusts reserves, and completes all necessary claims reporting forms and documents.- Disburses all necessary claims forms and documents for completion by the customer.- Determines coverage and/or validity of claims through policy wordings and/or other related acts and their regulations.- Interpret and explains coverages, benefits, breaches of condition and/or exclusions to customers and/or their representatives, brokers, or other parties as required.- Contacts and/or interviews other SGI personnel, brokers, customers, witnesses, third parties, outside adjusters, contractors, retail or repair firms, police and fire departments, legal representatives, medical professionals, technical experts, or other external persons as required.- Obtains statements under oath, proofs of loss, medical reports, non-waiver agreements, final releases, salvage releases, and other documents related to the settlement and disposition of claims.- Reviews estimates of the damage or loss provided by 3rd parties.- Responds to questions and/or correspondence regarding status and disposition of claim files.- Maintains claims records and files in accordance with departmental, divisional, and/or corporate procedures and standards.- Refers claims of a suspicious or contentious nature or of a large dollar magnitude to the proper level of authority for assistance.- Assesses degree of negligence and/or the extent of quantum in claims of liability or bodily injury.- Supervises and/or processes the settlement of out-of-province claims and/or claims handled by independent adjusters.- Attends to road assignments and adjusts claims arising at some distance from established headquarters.- Determines possibility of subrogation and takes appropriate action.- Negotiates settlements with 3rd parties and/or representatives.- Recommends approval and prepares claim files for legal action, further investigation, review by other personnel, and/or denial.- Reconciles invoices against estimates of damage or loss.- Processes accounts and expenses for payment and submits for approval where required.- Represents the interests of the corporation in Small Claims Court, mediation, higher levels of court, and/or other judicial, legal, institutional, or regulatory groups or bodies.- Engages and provides direction to external counsel where required.- Adjusters review litigation budgets, litigation plans, pay legal invoices and disbursements involving external counsel.- Obtains and utilizes settlement authority as required.

Customer Experience and Relationship Management- Addresses coverage decision responses and payments in a concise and timely fashion.- Provides updates and information to all stakeholders to promote transparency and efficiency in the claims handling process.- Anticipates client needs and seeks to find solutions while adhering to company guidelines.- Develops and maintains relationships and communication with broker partners and other vendors to promote trust and confidence in claims processes and procedures.- Participates in and supports a team environment where collaboration and input is valued and respected by its members.- Acquires new information from industry sources and proposes ideas for process improvement and efficiencies.
