**About the Opportunity**:
The Associate Physician Veterans Services, Family Practice Inpatient Service, is a licensed (Associate Physician) physician employed by the Nova Scotia Health Authority to provide medical care under the supervision of a fully licensed physician. This position is assigned to the Department of Family Practice. The Associate Physician will report directly to the Medical Director Veterans Services or his/her designate and indirectly to the Executive Medical Director through the Central Zone Director, Medical Affairs. Associate Physicians are supervised daily through direct and indirect supervision by designated physician supervisors as appropriate. Participation in the call schedule is required and work on Inpatient Units, or other areas as clinical need and supervisory requirements dictate.

**Clinical Responsibilities**

Under the supervision of an attending member of the Department of Family Practice:

- Functions as a member of the team in the Family Practice. Makes regular rounds with supervising staff, fellows, and residents on the wards, the emergency department and in the ICU as required.
- Liaises with attending staff, nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, social workers, physiotherapists, physician house staff and other members of the health care team in the development and delivery of the overall patient care program.
- Communicates with patients, families, referring and family physicians concerning patient management plans.
- Performs and documents admission history and physical examinations, progress notes, discharge summaries, death certificates, etc.
- Manages the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders on charts and responding to emergencies, in consultation with attending staff.
- Performs procedures within the scope of his/her demonstrated competence including: the insertion of peripheral intravenous lines, initiation of intravenous medication, taking blood samples for diagnostic purposes or arterial blood gases, insertion of Foley catheters, insertion of naso-gastric tubes, assessment of surgical wounds, placing or changing a wound VAC, removal of surgical drains/clips, insertion and removal of chest tubes, abdominal paracentesis, insertion of central venous catheters, and insertion of Peripheral Intravenous Central Catheters (PICC). In any and all of the above the Associate Physician will not proceed until full training and competence has been established with sign off by the Medical Director Veterans or his/her designate.
- If competency to do so has been established and signed off by Medical Director Veterans or his/her designate, the Associate Physician will conduct assessments of patients in the emergency room and in-house patient consultations to Family Practice. This includes the Family Practice assessment of the trauma patient.
- Arranges consultations with other departments for care and investigation.
- Follows through on investigations and arranges follow-up outpatient visits.
- Attends educational sessions and rounds as time permits.
- Interacts with and orientates clinical clerks and PGY1’s, new to the Family Practice Service.
- Participates in on-call responsibilities of the service.

**About You**:

- Must be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills
- Completion of the equivalence of a rotating internship and postgraduate training and experience in Family Medicine are consider assets
- Physical demand - Must be able to sit, stand, walk and perform duties as outlined above
- Mental and Visual demand - High; must be able to deal with stressful situations
- Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred
