INDIGENOUS MENTAL HEALTH WORKER - NON-UNION POSITION

As a key member of the Mental Health team, the Indigenous Mental Health Worker is responsible for providing culturally relevant mental health and addictions support services to students and families in compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, acts and policies of Superior-Greenstone District School Board.

Indigenous Mental Health Worker -Priorities

SPIRITUAL

Ensuring that there is a connection between mental health, well-being, culture and community.

Land based treatment approach and the inclusion of alternative approaches to the therapeutic environment

PHYSICAL

Life promotion and suicide prevention to ensure the safety and well-being of Indigenous students F

Focus on substance use education, harm reduction and the treatment of substance use conditions in conjunction with culture supports

EMOTIONAL

Building trusting relationships with students, families and communities that contribute to emotional health and connection to culture

MENTAL

Evidence based structured psychotherapy integrated with Indigenous ways of knowing to provide direct mental health services to children and youth

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
(this is not an exhaustive list)

Provide therapy, treatment and assessment for mental health and addictions support services to students and families when appropriate for Geraldton Composite High School, Nakina Public School, B.A. Parker Public School, Marjorie Mills Public School and Beardmore Public School

Offer mental health consultative support to school teams and staff

Build essential relationships with First Nations communities, services, and elders to establish a circle of care for children and youth

Provide support and strategies to educators and school administrators to support well-being and student learning in alignment with the school-based IEP's health care plans and learning goals to reach their academic potential.

Implement health promotion activities, events and programming pertaining to topics of student well-being and connected to culturally responsive practice.

Consul, collaborate and liaise with outside agencies, First Nation communities and services and professionals to provide enhanced access to mental health supports, services and agencies.

Deliver services to student in crises and respond to tragic events as well as liaising with Frist Nations communities to be responsive in community for tragic events.

Engage in initiatives to support mental health from a board wide/regional perspective and the implementation of culturally responsive practice in mental health, which includes land-based practices and cultural initiatives.

**EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE**:
A University Degree in Social Work, Psychology (Counselling) or another specialization relevant to the position, or a combination of experience, education and training.

A minimum of two (2) years of progressive related experience.

A registered member in good standing of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) or other regulated body.

Extensive knowledge of Indigenous ways of knowing and culturally informed Social Work practice.

Strong planning and organizational skills, ability to multitask and manage timelines.

Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including presentation skills when required.

Display excellent interpersonal skills while building positive relationships.

Take the initiative and make decisions based on judgement, facts and alternatives.

Foster collaborative relationships and provide excellent customer service to internal and external stakeholders.

Bilingualism (English/French/Anishinaabemowin) considered an asset

**EFFORT**:
Demand on energy as a result of developing relationships with and responding to multiple stakeholders, making presentations and juggling multiple/different areas of responsibility.

Regularly required to respond to/address difficult interactions with little or no notice.

Slightly fatiguing physical effort on a frequent basis (standing, sitting, walking).

Continuous mental effort such as active listening to students, close observation, intense concentration, and attention to detail.

**WORKING CONDITIONS**:
Most working hours are in a normal indoor working environment. Potential requirement to extend work hours in the case of a crisis or tragic event.

Frequent exposure to moderately disagreeable elements (ie. angry parents or students) and occasional exposure to highly disagreeable elements such as verbal abuse, blood

Occasional exposure to hazardous elements (ie. verbal abuse, suicidal ideation in clientele, violence, and physical aggression)

Required to respond to emergencies, and regularly attend meetings and make presentation outside normal business hours.
