Position Information

**Position Title**
- Makerspace Technician (2 positions)**Position Summary**
- Are you looking for an opportunity to use your creative skills and engage with learners in the Makerspace? We welcome you to the Student Success team as a part-time Makerspace Technician.
- The Makerspace Technician (MT) champions discovery, collaboration, and innovation. You will do this by challenging RDP students, faculty, staff, and the community, to think critically and solve problems through doing and tinkering, teamwork, taking risks and learning from mistakes.
- The MT supports the culture of making at Red Deer Polytechnic. This includes implementation of programs and services to support the design, creation and digital literacy needs of RDP students, staff, faculty, and community partners; delivering presentations, workshops and tours related to creating, using, and approaching design, digital literacy, and maker culture; and the proper and safe use of Makerspace tools, software and equipment. The incumbent promotes a hi-fi and low-fi maker culture within the Makerspace. The MT is also responsible for maintaining the makerspace, equipment, and software, including proper and safe use and inventory control.**Position Responsibilities**
- Responsibilities include the following:

- **Makerspace Instructional and Technical Support**
- Demonstrates a strong commitment to the provision of high-quality public service and
proactively communicates best practices for creation in and use of the Makerspace by:

- Monitoring and coordinating the various activities, programs, and maker traffic within the Makerspace.
- Actively soliciting feedback and gathering information about the needs of RDP students, faculty, staff, and community partners and sharing this information with their supervisor and colleagues.
- Identifying and troubleshooting technology and equipment problems
- Assists RDP students, faculty, staff, and community partners in the proper and safe use of the equipment and technology and contributes expertise to projects and assignments across arrange of disciplines.
- Assists with design, 3D modelling and tactile learning in the creation of physical and digital projects and prototypes; includes recommending alternate approaches, equipment and / or materials in order to successfully complete either an assignment or personal project as necessary.

**Training Program Implementation and Delivery**
- Delivers formal and informal training and workshops on using Makerspace equipment and
- technology in accordance with RDP policies and procedures, and OH&S Standards.
- Provides training to RDP students, faculty, staff and community partners about the RDP Makerspace, maker culture, design and the safe and proper use of tools and equipment.
- Assists with developing and delivering presentations, tours, and workshops to facilitate use of the Makerspace and related tools and technologies including preparing materials and / or equipment for Makerspace activities and tours and designing and testing prototypes as appropriate.

**Makerspace Safety**
- Informs RDP students, faculty and staff, and the community about the Makerspace Safety, provides a safety overview of the space and as required directs users of the space to review the information for using certain equipment.
- Provides ongoing supervision of the space, tools, equipment, and materials to ensure they are used in a safe and proper manner and in accordance with RDP policies and OH&S standards.
- Ensures space is maintained as a safe environment and messes are cleaned up in a timely fashion.

**Space & Equipment Maintenance & Materials Management**
- Ensures space and equipment are maintained in terms of cleanliness and usability including performing minor repairs and fabrication (e.g., tables, assembly of 3D printers or equipment, cleaning laser head on laser engraver etc.) as required.
- Performs regular maintenance and repairs on all Makerspace equipment in accordance with Vendor Maintenance Procedures.
- Prepares Makerspace equipment (e.g., adjusting settings on 3D printers, laser engraver) so projects can be created successfully.
- Repairs damaged equipment and performs emergency maintenance on equipment as required.
- Monitors and maintains an inventory of materials and notifies supervisor when replacements or new materials or equipment are required.

**Required Qualifications**
- Two (2) years of post-secondary training, completion of a community college certificate including trades apprenticeships or equivalent.
- Strong customer service orientation and one-year related customer service experience with a strong customer service orientation
- Experience and ability to use effective verbal and written communication skills to build effective relationships with people in one-on-one and group situations
