**Role Responsibilities**:

As a Public Health Veterinarian, your role is pivotal in ensuring the health and safety of our community. This position involves a diverse range of duties and responsibilities, requiring highly specific and observable actions that reflect your expertise and dedication.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- **Surveillance and Environmental Scanning**: Maintaining and enhancing organizational awareness and knowledge of disease and emerging issues in animal populations that have potential public health implications is a core responsibility. This involves monitoring disease reports and outbreaks, engaging in interagency and intergovernmental meetings, and taking proactive measures to prevent public health risks.
- **Expert Advisory and Collaboration**: As an expert in veterinary medicine, you will provide crucial advice on matters related to animal and public health. Your role will involve working closely with other health professionals, government agencies, and community groups to develop comprehensive health strategies.
- **Community Engagement and Education**: Engaging with the veterinary and public health communities is vital. You will be expected to lead educational initiatives, provide expert advice to health professionals and the public, and participate in community outreach programs to raise awareness about animal and public health issues. There is some potential for interaction with media related to emerging public health issues (e.g. zoonotic diseases).

**Qualifications**:
**Minimum Requirements for the Role**:

- University graduation with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent plus six years' experience related to the Requirements posted below.
- Strong foundation in veterinary medicine, with a focus on public health.
- Equivalencies will be considered_

**Further Requirements**:

- Specific knowledge of the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and control of endemic and foreign livestock diseases, especially those important to public health, food safety, and market access for livestock and livestock products.
- Awareness of national and international animal health policies.
- Awareness of the current animal health status of Alberta's livestock herd.
- Comprehension of the complexities of modern livestock production methods and their impact on animal health and welfare.
- Knowledge of the principles and limitations of diagnostic tests.
- Knowledge of the principles of epidemiology and awareness of risk assessment (analysis, management, and communication) and statistical methods.
- Eligibility to be licensed by the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association.
- Ability to develop and implement animal and public health policies.

**Assets**:

- Experience in government or large-scale organizational settings.
- Advanced training or certifications in public health, epidemiology, or related fields.

**Notes**:

- Hours of work: 36.25 per week
- Monday to Friday, 8:15am to 4:30pm
- Occasional overtime or weekend work may be required
- Some travel within the province to meet with industry stakeholders, attend conferences/ speaking engagements is required for this role.
- There may occasionally be a need for out of province or out of country travel.
