**General Accountability**:

- Reporting to the Director - Occupational Hygiene and Environment, this position is responsible for performing various duties related to protecting the health and safety of employees, customers and environment of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). The incumbent monitors corporate compliance to applicable government legislation, regulations, standards and guidelines. The role is responsible for: developing, recommending, and maintaining occupational hygiene standards, programs and procedures; investigating and evaluating existing or potential health hazards in the workplace; conducting and/or overseeing occupational hygiene sampling and testing activities; interpreting findings and making recommendations to prevent, eliminate, control and reduce health hazards; and developing and delivering training programs. They will be a corporate technical resource and provide advice and direction regarding legislated requirements. They will liaise with TTC departments, external agencies and material suppliers concerning occupational hygiene matters and associated environmental issues; and prepare various reports, documentation, analyses and recommendations related to the work.**Key Job Functions**:

- Monitor corporate compliance to applicable government legislation and regulations:
- Understand and interpret current legislation and regulations related to protecting the health and safety of employees and customers;
- Advise Management of actual and potential compliance issues;
- Research, develop, recommend, implement and maintain occupational hygiene standards, policies, programs and procedures, and training; and
- Anticipate new and emerging hazards; and
- Audit current programs to determine if new strategies or programs are needed or working as planned.
- Investigate and evaluate existing or potential risks to health in the workplace:
- Identify, investigate and assess existing or potential health hazards in the workplaceand transit system;
- Evaluate the existing controls for effectiveness; assess the need for occupational hygiene sampling and testing, develop methods as necessary, and determine appropriate techniques and equipment to be used;
- Conduct and/or oversee sampling and testing activities to identify health hazards and determine the level of contaminants which could be physical, chemical, biological or ergonomic in origin, accurately measuring and sampling levels of exposure using specialized equipment;
- Coordinate and direct the activities of Contracted Services and external agencies involved in investigations regarding exposure of employees and customers to health hazards; and
- Assist with reviewing Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) occupational illness claims to determine if there were exposures in the workplace and may help with reviewing occupational exposure history.
- Investigate complaints regarding occupational hygiene hazards, mediate and resolve related work refusals, and advise the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) as required.
- Interpret findings and make recommendations to prevent, eliminate, control or reduce risks to occupational health hazards:
- Provide clear direction as to corrective action(s) that must be taken
- Verify accuracy of Service Providers’ reports and studies to ensure adherence to standard occupational hygiene principles;
- Develop and monitor appropriate responses to occupational hygiene inquiries
- Act as a corporate technical resource and provide advice and direction regarding legislated requirements and occupational hygiene policies:
- Provide consultative advice, guidance and direction to TTC management, staff and employees regarding legislated requirements, occupational hygiene policies, standards, programs, procedures and associated issues and concerns;
