**POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES**:
The duties for this position may involve but are not limited to:

- Manages risk and liability for York Regional Police through the delivery of legal services
- Manages risk and liability of the York Regional Police through the provision of leadership, direction, expertise and advice in the delivery of a broad range of legal services to the Chief of Police and members.
- Assesses risk on a continuous and proactive basis, providing risk management advice and strategies.
- Conducts legal research and analysis and preparing opinions and advice on legal matters.
- Provides leadership, direction, expertise and advice in the delivery of a broad range of legal services to the Chief of Police and members.
- Assesses risk on a continuous and proactive basis, provides risk management advice and strategies.
- Conducts legal research and analysis and prepares opinions and advice on legal matters.
- Provides legal advice on operational matters.
- Upon request, provides legal advice to the Professional Standards Bureau.
- Prepares joint forces agreements and protocols with non-police agencies.
- Attends Senior Management Meetings and meetings with Region of York Legal Branch.
- Attends court on issues including motions for production of police records and other orders affecting York Regional Police.
- Provides direction, expertise, advice and advocacy. on civil, administrative and criminal matters
- Provides legal knowledge, information and advice regarding YRP matters to the Executive Leadership Team, Senior Leaders and other members of YRP.
- Collaborates with Corporate Development and the Professionalism, Leadership and Inclusion Office to ensure alignment between training programs, organizational values and the law.
- Develops content and delivers training to YRP members on legal issues.
- Continually updates knowledge of changes in case law and legislation and attends continuing legal education seminar and conferences.
- Participates in OACP Police Legal Advisors Committee meetings.
- Provides advice to the Quality Assurance & Risk Management Unite, drafting legal content for procedures and command directives, reviewing procedures and command directives for legal compliance.
- Creates and maintains continuous improvement of training programs related to legal topics, ensuring compliance with the law:

- Collaborates with Learning & Development to create course standards;
- Identifies areas in need of legal training;
- Determines organizational priorities in legal training based on risk, and current conditions/status of the law;
- Consult on requests for new legal related training and creation of content;
- Assists with research, linking content to law, and creation of scenarios for annual In-Service Training;
- Provides classroom instruction and online delivery of training programs
- Reviews the legal content of other training provided by YRP to ensure organizational consistency and legal accuracy;
- Makes recommendations on use of external training for YRP membership
- Acts as legal counsel for York Regional Police on legal matters including records production, civil orders, subpoenas, operational matters, privacy and freedom of information.
- Supervises the preparation of civil defence briefs in matters naming York Regional Police or related parties and ensures timely communication and instruction.
- Provides legal knowledge, information and advice regarding York Regional Police matters to Chief, Senior Officers, members, police legal advisors, external counsel, and members of the public.
- Develops and delivers training to police officers and civilian members on legal issues.
- Upon request, provides guidance, coaching and advice to police officers and other members in handling sensitive or complex issues.
- Continually updates knowledge of changes in case law and legislation. Attends continuing legal education seminars and conferences.
