**Job Overview**

The Weekend & Substitute Kitchen Assistant is responsible for supporting culinary operations within a Catholic rectory which also serves as a seminary. This role involves setting up and closing down lunch and dinner service and setting up breakfast daily for as many as 40 residents, including seminarians, priests, and staff members; additional responsibilities include cleaning, replenishment of supplies, and some food preparation, always under the guidance and direction of the Chef. This part-time position involves working fixed hours on weekends, statutory holidays, vacation periods, and other days when the Weekday Kitchen Assistant is away. The Kitchen Assistant will ensure that all tasks are performed in accordance with established guidelines. This position requires good work ethic, organizational abilities, and scheduling flexibility.

**Hours & Wages**
- 8 hours/day
- $17.20 per hour.

**Duties & Responsibilities**
- Prepares tables for lunch and dinner service and sets up the kitchen and refectory for the next day’s breakfast.
- Lays out serving dishes (platters, plates, bowls, soup terrines) for lunch and dinner service.
- Assists the Chef by performing basic preparatory tasks as needed, including washing and cutting produce and putting out condiments and crackers.
- Prepares the salad bar for lunch service and makes coffee and tea for lunch and dinner service.
- Monitors and replenishes food supply in the refectory.
- Under the direction of the Chef, ensures a timely and accurate meal service according to a strict schedule coordinated with the liturgical, educational, and professional life of the residents.
- Assists as needed with plating dishes and, during meal service, places dishes to be served in the drum and retrieves dirty dishes.
- Washes and stores all cooking appliances, utensils, cutting boards, and dishes.
- Conducts a thorough nightly cleaning and sanitization of floors and work surfaces, takes out garbage, and replaces garbage bags.
- Together with the chef, ensures proper storage, handling, and labeling of food items to prevent spoilage and cross-contamination.
- Maintains a positive and professional demeanor in the kitchen, respecting the religious character of the establishment and ensuring silence is kept during dinner service.
- Assists the Chef in providing food service for occasional special events in the seminary and parish.

**Requirements**:

- Successful work experience in meal service.
- Ability to perform well under pressure and work quickly and efficiently.
- Strong capacity for close collaboration and teamwork.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing needs and schedules.
- Knowledge of food safety and sanitation regulations and best practices.
- Basic understanding of how to use kitchen equipment.
- Ability to honour and maintain confidentiality.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality.
