The North American business divisions (Gerdau Long Steel North America and Gerdau Specialty Steel North America) produce long and special steel products for the agriculture, energy, industrial, automotive, and manufacturing markets.
We stimulate the economy through our network of recycling operations and mills. We serve customers throughout the U.S. and Canada, through a vertically integrated network of mini-mills, scrap recycling facilities and downstream operations offering a diverse and balanced product mix.
Our mills utilize efficient and clean production practices, including the use of electric arc furnace (EAF) technology. The use of this technology and its process makes our steel one of the greenest choices available.
**Position Description & Purpose**:
This job’s primary function is to lead the progression of the plant toward the Health and Safey excellence expected by Gerdau.
This position will be responsible mainly for implementing and maintaining the Gerdau H&S programs, but also for supporting and maintaining our quality management system per the ISO 9001 standard and coordinating employee training.
This position will include responsibilities for H&S (75%), for quality (25%) and for the training required to support those programs.
**Key Duties & Responsibilities**:
**Health and Safety Program**:
- Ensure compliance with CNESST and Gerdau regulations as the H&S representative for the plant.
- Train employees, supervisors, managers, and other leaders in the company on health and safety standards with Gerdau’s training material
- Supervise risk assessments to gather information on safety issues including PRA (Probabilistic risk assessment) and SFA (Safe Job Analysis).
- Conduct accident investigations with the employees and supervisors involved.
- Review and recommend changes to regular activities to improve the safety of the plant.
- Lead the joined health and safety plant committee monthly meetings and the monthly meeting with Gerdau.
**Quality Management system**:
- Ensure that quality Management system requirements are met, maintained, updated, documented, and audited.
- Monitor testing and inspection of materials and products to ensure finished product quality.
- Maintain the quality assurance manual, procedures, work instructions, forms and quality plans, and all applicable component of the plant’s quality management system.
- Maintain the plant’s certification to a recognized standard like ISO:9001 or ARR M-1003.
- Document all non-conformances. Review causes and propose corrective actions.
- Investigate customer complaints and non-conformance issues.
- Analyze data to identify areas for improvement in the quality system.
- Develop, recommend, and monitor corrective and preventive actions.
**Supervisory Responsibilities & Reporting Structure**:

- Reports to: Plant Manager
**Metrics for Success**:
- LTA rate, TCIR, Severity rate
- Training completions
- Customer complains
**Qualifications and Educational requirement(s)**:
- 2 to 5 years in a Health and Safety leadership role and a 4-year degree from an accredited college or university.
- Preferred experience in the following industries: 1. Steel, 2. Rail & Mining, 3. Metals Manufacturing, 4. Commodities pertaining to the steel industry, 5. Metals Distribution/Service Centers, 6. General Manufacturing (industrial).
- Basic computer skills required (ex. Excel, Outlook, Word).
- Must be bilingual, fluent in French and English.
