Supportive Housing Worker

1 Position
35 hours Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm

Full Time 1 year contract position
Bargaining Unit Position

Role Responsibilities:
Assist tenants living with serious mental illness, which can include addictions, in achieving successful long-term tenancy outcomes by:

- De-escalating crises and conflicts;
- Providing emotional and practical support, including basic needs: e.g. grocery shopping, facilitating internal food bank distribution and vaccine clinics
- Assessing the needs of tenants through regular, meaningful communication and wellness checks;
- Supporting tenant involvement in decision-making processes;
- Educating tenants of their responsibilities under the _Residential Tenancies Act _as well as their rights;
- Addressing breaches of the lease agreement and the _RTA;_
- Appearing at the _Ontario Landlord and Tenant Board_ as required;
- Working with tenants and any supports, such as case managers they _might_ have, to develop and implement significant housing support plans;
- Facilitating life-skills development;
- Providing referral to, and collaborating with, appropriate health and community social services;
- Co-creating, and supporting, community development initiatives with tenants;
- Initiating and leading the planning and facilitation of group meetings;
- Prompt data entry into a tenant member Information System to demonstrate performance of funded activities;
- Evaluating project/program effectiveness, with an aim to improve tenants' living conditions
- Collaborating with building/property staff of Houselink & Mainstay, the landlord, as the SHW is the main point of contact for assigned tenants;
- Reporting observed hazards/threats to staff health & safety directly to Manager and Director;
- Constructively contributing to efforts to continuously improve the residential and office work environments.

Role Qualifications:

- 3 to 4 years' experience working with homeless people or those precariously housed;
- Understanding of the causes of poverty and homelessness;
- A passion to join our efforts to help move individuals from homelessness and temporary housing, to a home.
- Understanding of how lack of housing impacts people living with mental illness;
- Familiarity with the _Residential Tenancies Act;_
- A non-judgmental approach to serious mental illnesses and alcohol and drug addictions;
- Knowledge of how various mental illnesses present; potential symptoms and related behaviors;
- Well versed in current approaches for adult mental health and addictions, harm reduction and client-centered, anti-oppression principles;
- Excellent interpersonal communication, and networking skills;
- Demonstrated conflict resolution and crisis prevention/intervention skills
- Respect for challenges of people who have experienced violence and/or social isolation;
- Comfortable working alone, while part of a larger team of Supportive Housing and Peer Support Workers, covering a sizeable portfolio of tenants and geographic locations;
- Dependable attendance record upon which tenant and team members can rely;
- Undergraduate degree/College diploma in the study of Affordable Housing; Community Work; Social Services or a related field;

Role Assets:

- Direct experience in supportive housing;
- Knowledge of the _Mental Health Act;_
- Prior use of a tenant member / client service Management Information System for recording interactions and entering safety alerts;
- Familiarity with Yardi, a property and financial management software, for entering building work orders and checking rent payment status

This is a position inside the bargaining unit, governed by the terms of a collective agreement. The annual rate of pay is $51,010.
