In support of the professional development of existing, and novice staff on the Medical Unit 2B, we are seeking

Registered Nurses who are interested in becoming a Nurse Champion (NC) for this unit. The NC will support 2B

(>50%) of the time and also the other Medical units, 2A and 2C. The NC is recognized as an expert clinician with

demonstrated knowledge and skills in critical thinking, teamwork, and problem solving.

Reporting to the Administrative Manager of 2A, 2B and Transitional Care Unit (TCU), the NC supports and provides

clinical leadership for the inpatient medical units. The NC is responsible, under the collaboration with and direction of

the Administrative Manager, working with the program/service leadership team to plan and coordinate the day to day

activities related to quality and safety on evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts. This individual will provide

clinical and professional leadership to facilitate a safe and effective work environment that embraces both efficiency

and professional accountability amongst all staff members to ensure and monitor the quality of patient care and

professional standards of practice.

The NC bases their decisions on the Mission, Vision, and Values of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre

(The Hospital), the principles of Patient and Family Centered Care, Inter professional Collaboration, continuous

quality improvement, and the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Qualifications:

- Unencumbered registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of acute care nursing experience as an RN
- Excellent clinical skills and competencies
- Outstanding communication skills
- Previous experience teaching, working with learners and/or in a preceptor role
- Previous experience as Clinical Instructor or placement supervisor
- Demonstrated leadership, change management, and problem solving skills
- CNA certification preferred
- Commitment to excellence with demonstrated leadership qualities, decision making and problem solving skills and

clinical credibility
- Knowledge of practice standards and guiding principles to foster professional practice and accountability
- Demonstrates strong organizational skills in order to monitor and address the needs of a large group of staff
- Highly motivated, team player with the ability to work within a dynamic transformational clinical redesigning process
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong computer skills, Word Processing, Excel

*Assisting the nursing staff with clinical skills and/or processes, understanding of policies, procedures and/or medical

directives

*Facilitating knowledge translation

*Mentoring/guiding nurses through the nursing process and associated interventions

*Assisting with patient assignments for staff, for both oncoming and ongoing shifts

*Assisting with ensuring appropriate workloads for patient/staff assignments

*Assisting with admissions, discharges, transfers, bed moves, and planning

*Assisting with transferring patients when necessary

*Familiarity using Mechanical Lifts, Slider boards, etc.

*Assisting with UL duties

*Assisting staff to delegate tasks to get to breaks on time, and complete duties by end of shift

*Assisting staff with unexpected events, and coming up with reasonable solutions

*Assisting in decision making when floating staff to other areas

*Assisting with processing orders
