The Clinical Scholar will be an experienced nurse with frontline experience who is employed in a supernumerary position to provide mentorship to newly graduated nurses to support their transition into the workforce. Types of new nurses include nursing graduates, internationally educated nurses (IENs) and nurses looking to upskill. Through this program Clinical Scholar will be required to focus exclusively on mentoring newly graduated nurses in their transition into the nursing workforce without a patient case load. The Clinical Scholar role is designed for any Registered Nurse (RN) or a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) in the General Class; or nurses who have retired and still registered with the CNO. You demonstrate leadership, change management, and problem-solving skills. You have excellent organizational skills and have the ability to prioritize workload. You also have excellent communication skills and demonstrate strong conflict resolution skills. You have a good understanding of professional practice standards and CNO standards of practice. This position supports the hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, learners, volunteers and families.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support and mentor new graduates at the organizational and unit level by demonstrating a good understanding of the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Professional Standards when working with new Healthcare Workers.
- Support new graduates’ practice and integration into the clinical area in accordance with organizational and professional standards, and in collaboration with clinical teams.
- Create, adapt, and deliver orientation and learning resources, using various delivery methods in accordance with organizational and unit policies/practices/guidelines.
- Provide an ongoing presence on the clinical unit(s) to support the ongoing development of the new graduates as well as tracking and documentation of skillset achievement.
- Provide ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the new graduate and the scholar program including the creation of learning goals and objectives. Development of action plans and identification or any barriers to learning will also be an expectation.
- Serve as a liaison and conduit between unit leadership, Professional Practice and Operations.
- Qualifications Required and Preferred- Registered Nurse (RN) or a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) in the General Class; or nurses who have retired and still registered with the CNO
- Experience in frontline care in a hospital clinical setting and competencies to provide training and mentorship to newly graduated nurses
- Excellent clinical skills and competencies
- Outstanding communication skills
- Previous experience teaching, working with clinical learners, and/or precepting
- Demonstrated leadership, change management, and problem-solving skills
