**Outpatient Pharmacy Technician**

**Length of Temporary Contract: 18 months**

To provide technical support services relative to the needs of the outpatient pharmacy; to provide medication distribution services in outpatient setting with automation technology; to provide materiel management services (acquisition, storage, expiry date monitoring and accounts payable activities) consistent with the medication distribution system; to provide workload and quality data related to all functions; to support continuous quality improvement activities. The technician performs all activities in accordance with Providence Healthcare's philosophy, mission and values.

**MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Dispense medication orders for discharged patients in the hospital consistent with established procedures, good practice standards and safety requirements;
- Check medications independently as registered Pharmacy Technician without pharmacist supervision as per departmental policies and procedures;
- Operate automation technology used in the distribution process in a safe, effective, and efficient manner;
- Process daily routines in the appropriate computer system as per operating procedures;
- Issue narcotic and controlled drugs consistent with standards for security including Federal and Provincial legislations;
- Order, receive and document shipments of narcotic and controlled drugs consistent with the legislated requirements. Ensure secure storage of same;
- Maintain a perpetual inventory record for all medications including narcotics;
- Conduct daily narcotic counts. Report any narcotic discrepancy immediately to the Outpatient Pharmacy Manager or delegate;
- Use appropriate aseptic technique, prepare sterile injectable as needed (e.g. botox for Clinics);
- Ensure appropriate documentation for dispensing, crediting returns, and monitoring expiry dates, stock levels, etc.;
- Monitor expiry dates and remove expired products for disposal, destruction or return to manufacturer consistent with facility policies and manufacturers’ protocols;
- Process expired narcotics and controlled drug to obtain approval for proper disposal;
- Dispense in blister package, dossett or other patient adherence device as required;
- Using the appropriate pharmacy information system, place orders maintaining appropriate documentation, e.g., purchase order, receiving report, packing slip, invoice and other relevant documentation;
- Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act;
- Comply with established infection and prevention control best practices (e.g. IPAC core competencies);
- Comply with the Code of Ethics from the Ontario College of Pharmacists.

**QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIRED**:

- Graduated from a recognized Community College;
- Registered (or eligible for registration as soon as possible) with the Ontario College of Pharmacists as Registered Pharmacy Technician;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office software;
- Familiarity with Kroll Pharmacy computer software; strong skills in pharmaceutical calculations; knowledge of pharmacy automation technology, computerized materiel management and inventory control procedures an asset;
- Familiarity with basic medication safety principles required;
- Familiarity with equipment including electronic balances, counting machine, facsimile machine, photocopier, keyboard and computer terminal;
- Excellent attendance record.

**Salary**: $28.47-$35.95 per hour
