**Job Title**: Lead Surgery Animal Care Attendant (ACA)
**Reports To**: Head of the surgery Department & Head Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)
**Job Summary**: The Lead Surgery Animal Care Attendant (ACA) plays a critical role in overseeing the daily operations of the surgery/anesthesia ACA support team. This individual ensures high standards of patient care, organization, and cleanliness within the surgical area and serves as a liaison between the animal care attendants, veterinary technicians, and veterinarians. The Lead Surgery ACA is responsible for guiding, training, and supporting the ACA team to deliver exceptional patient care and maintain a safe, efficient surgery environment.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- **Team Leadership and Training**:
- Supervise, mentor, and provide guidance to the surgery ACA team, ensuring adherence to hospital surgical protocols and high standards of patient care.
- Coordinate and delegate daily and monthly tasks and responsibilities among the ACA team to meet surgical, anesthesia and patient care needs.
- Train new ACA team members on surgical protocols, patient and operating room preparation cleaning procedures, equipment and instrument turnover and processing, and patient handling techniques.
- Conduct regular check-ins and provide constructive feedback to the ACA team to encourage growth and skill development.
- Supervise the surgical areas such as the operating room hallway and surgical suites to ensure all staff are aware of and adhere to surgical and safety protocols, including usage of PPE.
- **Surgical Preparation and Support**:
- Oversee the setup and preparation of surgical suites, ensuring all necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies are ready and sterilized.
- Oversee the preparation of the surgical suite, sterile equipment, tables, and instruments and ensure adherence to sterile technique.
- Assist in the preparation and positioning of animals for surgery, following aseptic techniques and maintaining patient safety and comfort.
- Coordinate with RVTs and veterinarians to manage the schedule and flow of patients through pre-op, surgery, and recovery areas.
- **Patient Care and Monitoring**:
- Ensure that patients receive proper pre
- and post-operative care, including toilet breaks and comfortable bedding is provided.
- Monitor patients for any changes in condition and promptly communicate concerns to the appropriate team members.
- **Facility and Equipment Maintenance**:
- Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and organization within surgery suites, prep rooms, and patient holding areas, adhering to hospital sanitation protocols.
- Comprehensive understanding and knowledge, including ability to clean, maintain, and properly label and store all equipment and instruments.
- Manage, maintain, and track inventory of surgical and medical supplies, restocking as needed and notifying management of any shortages or equipment issues. Placing orders for surgical consumables.
- Advanced knowledge of equipment, ability to troubleshoot and assist the ACA team when equipment issues occur. Memorize locations of all equipment and instruments.
- **Record-Keeping and Communication**:
- Document patient care activities accurately, including feeding, medication administration, and any behavioral observations on Instinct
- Facilitate clear and consistent communication between ACAs, RVTs, and veterinarians, ensuring smooth surgical operations and patient care.
- Participate in team meetings to discuss protocols, workflow improvements, and any patient care concerns.
- **Administrative Support**:
- Schedule and organize shifts for the surgery ACA team, ensuring adequate coverage for patient and surgical support in all areas of both anesthesia and surgery departments.
- Assist in creating and updating ACA training materials and standard operating procedures for the surgery department.
- Lead or participate in projects aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the surgery/Induction area.
**Qualifications**:
- **Education**: High school diploma or equivalent required. Formal training in veterinary or animal care is an asset.
- **Experience**: Minimum of 2 years of experience as an Animal Care Attendant, preferably in a surgical or clinical environment. Previous supervisory experience is highly preferred but not essential.
- **Skills**:
- Strong leadership and organizational skills, with an ability to delegate tasks effectively.
- Exceptional attention to detail, surgical conscience, and commitment to maintaining cleanliness and following protocols.
- Proficient in animal handling and restraint techniques, ensuring patient safety and comfort.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion and a focus on patient and team wellbeing.
**Physical Requirements**:
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and kneeling in a fast-paced environment
