The HSE Manager North America is responsible for developing and implementing systems and processes which align with the requirements stipulated in ISO45001:2018 and ISO 14001:2015 for safety and environmental management. The HSE Manager North America role provides support and assistance to Director of Operations and oversees the work of the HS/E/Q Coordinators in Canada in addition to undertaking and leading projects as required to improve our performance in relation to health, safety and environmental issues for DSI’s North American operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Drive Health and Safety to be our employee’s primary focus.
- Provide advice on legal compliance in workplace health and safety including obligations under applicable local, provincial, state and federal acts and regulations.
- Ensure health and safety (including environment) requirements are maintained in accordance with relevant statutory legislation and company policies and procedures.
- Implement safety initiatives that drive continuous improvements in workplace health and safety.
- Develop workplace safety policies and procedures as identified.
- Conduct hazard identification and risk assessments on all equipment and activities onsite. Promote the systemic use of the Hazard / Risk Register.
- Review and audit DSI North America’s workplace health and safety (WHS) policies and procedures. Recommend relevant changes and updates in accordance with WHS standards.
- Conduct regular safety observations and audits in order to identify deficiencies to be addressed.
- Oversee the development and management of Return to Work (RTW) Plans for ill or injured employees; identify suitable duties for injured or ill employees.
- Assist in the development and implementation of a HSE competency framework.
- Oversee and maintain induction programs for each site. Ensure all new employees, contractors and labour hire personnel are correctly inducted and relevant training provided upon commencement.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of Work Instructions for all routine production tasks.
- Oversee monitoring programs which are required by local environmental authorities including compliance with regulatory requirements including air, water and waste.
- Oversee the management and response to any spills or other environmental incidents.
- Ensure that accountability exists among direct staff members regarding agreed upon performance against standards and benchmarks and on performance towards achieving the department’s goals and objectives.
- Provide direction, leadership, and mentoring to staff to accomplish company goals and objectives.
- Lead and model a continuous improvement approach utilizing the Lean methodologies to ensure efficiency and waste elimination.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
- Experience working with safety management system, environmental management systems, and lean manufacturing.
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements, legislation and compliance.
- Proven ability to build and maintain effective working relationships, including the ability to lead and influence others
- Strong verbal/written communication skills.
- Demonstrated strong organizational skills and ability to manage conflicting priorities.
- Experience in workplace health and safety investigations and root cause analysis.
- Return to Work (RTW) qualification and experience

EXPERIENCE
- 5 years of leading a team in the areas of quality, environment and/or health and safety in a manufacturing environment

EDUCATION
- Minimum diploma qualification in Health and Safety
- Internal Auditor certification is considered an asset
