**Position Summary**

Reporting to the University Veterinarian, the Compliance Veterinarian will play a pivotal role in the Animal Care and Use program in the Research Integrity portfolio at the University of Alberta, ensuring the ethical and humane treatment of animals in research, teaching, and testing activities. This position is involved in supporting and promoting scholarly integrity and improving institutional oversight as well as ensuring compliance with the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) standards and guidelines and other regulatory requirements.

The position will work closely with the University Veterinarian, Research Integrity Support (RIS) administrative staff, ACUC chairs, Animal Service Unit (Facility) veterinarians and staff, researchers, and other stakeholders to ensure the ethical and responsible use of animals in research, teaching, and testing activities at the University of Alberta. The position will ensure that animal care and use are in accordance with the guidelines and standards of the Canadian Council on Animal Care and the CALAM Standards of Veterinary Care and other federal and provincial animal protection legislative requirements including the Health of Animals Act, Alberta Animal Protection Act and Alberta Veterinary Profession Act. The main responsibilities will include leadership in the Post Approval Monitoring program and other activities to ensure compliance with CCAC standards and approved protocols, supporting training programs for research personnel, and working with and providing laboratory animal veterinary expertise to the Animal Care and Use Committee.

**Duties**

As part of the Research Integrity Support portfolio team responsible for the efficient and effective operation of the University’s Animal Care and Use Program and working under the direct supervision and authority of the University Veterinarian, the Compliance Veterinarian will conduct work in the following areas:

- Compliance Oversight: Operate closely with the ACUC, Animal Service Unit veterinarians and all researchers, staff and students involved with animal research and teaching to identify and rectify compliance issues relevant to the policies and guidelines established by the UA in accordance with the Canadian Council on Animal Care.
- ACUC Support: Serve as a voting member of the Animal Care and Use Committees (ACUCs), providing veterinary expertise to facilitate efficient and effective ACUC reviews. Review protocols and SOPs and work with researchers to ensure acceptable veterinary standards related to surgical, perioperative and experimental procedures, including animal handling and restraint, anesthesia and analgesia agent selection, substance administrat
