The Department of Medical Biophysics is home to a research intensive faculty having diverse basic medical science, and clinical interests, as well as training opportunities in professional, graduate and undergraduate programs. Research laboratories are distributed across Western’s main campus, and affiliated research institutes and hospitals in London, Ontario. This part-time position is based in Dr McGuire’s laboratory located on Western’s main campus.
The mission of Dr McGuire’s laboratory is discovery of novel solutions for human health and diseases by advancing basic medical sciences knowledge via research, teaching and training in cardiovascular sciences experimentation using laboratory models ranging from molecules to cells, tissues, and whole organisms. The purpose of the advertised position is to support basic science laboratory research in a project grant funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
**Responsibilities**:
- The successful applicant will prepare materials, set up apparatus, and conduct various scientific laboratory techniques by following set protocols and procedures in a research facility for the study of biological processes that modulate endothelial cells, and blood vessel functions. The role will provide/learn how to provide technical training in equipment used by undergraduate and graduate students and other research personnel to facilitate research results.**Qualifications**:
**Education**:
- Undergraduate Degree in a related field; or 2-year Community College Diploma in physical or medical sciences.
**Experience**:
- 1 year work experience supporting research in a related technical field
Skills, Abilities & Expertise:
- Competent practical laboratory skills for conducting protein biochemistry, and molecular biology assays with ability to use/learn how to use laboratory equipment.
- Competent skills in cell culture methodology with the ability to use/learn how to use cell culture equipment.
- Familiar with immunofluorescence, BRET/FRET, and other spectroscopy methodologies with ability to use/learn fluorescence microscopes and image data analyses, and automated plate imaging systems.
- Ability to identify key results from research, maintain clear, thorough, and up-to-date records of laboratory work, and to summarize research findings
- Ability to use library and online search tools to find technical information.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to clearly document technical information.
- Attention to detail with an ability to retrieve, analyze and synthesize data, while ensuring that information is accurate and comprehensive.
- Ability to follow formal processes and protocols with high attention to detail.
- Excellent troubleshooting aptitude along with hands-on expertise in technical support.
- Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public.
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve research goals.
- Familiar with University policies and procedures related to research preferred.
