Mental Health Care Worker

**REPORTS TO**

Facility Supervisor, House Administrator, Facility Nurse

**JOB SUMMERY**

Assisting residents at Melody House with mental, developmental and/or physical disabilities to live successfully in the community by providing a variety of day to day physical, emotional and social supports, life skills assistance, information, resources and demonstrations in accordance to preestablished care schedules.

**TYPICAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- To provide a home like environment in the residential setting and create opportunities for resident to reach his potential as per a resident’s ability and interest.
- In accordance with established care plans assists with the development of life skills, behavior management; demonstrates, models and provides life skills assistance for areas such as personal hygiene and housekeeping.
- Assists and provides input to the service provider and other health care providers such as the mental health team, personal physicians and therapists.
- Observes, monitors, identifies potential emergencies and reports to the service provider crisis situations such as clients voicing suicidal thoughts or other decompensation indicators. Reports medical, behavioural and psychiatric problems.
- Administers medication and treatments and provides medication reminders. Processes Doctors orders when the service provider or person in charge is not on duty eg. Medications delivered late or after-hours clinics. Observes and reports symptoms of medications such as complaints or concerns voiced by residents
- Assists residents and co-workers with household duties such as cleaning, laundry, housekeeping, preparing meals, cooking, serving meals monitoring food supplies.
- Assists, supervises and teaches on a one to one basis with clients by providing verbal instruction and demonstrating techniques to perform life skills.
- Assisting residents to organize, coordinate and implement daily schedules and appointments such as Doctors appointments and social events.
- Assist in seeking out available social, economic and recreational service resources in the community which may meet residents needs in a group or as an individual. Provides residents with corresponding related information. Implement programs outside of the facility encouraging participation.
- Completes and maintains related records and documentation such as progress notes in the current charting and daily logs in the shift change binder.
- To be aware of all the exits, emergency procedures and phone numbers, as well as the location and use of fire extinguishers, location and use of gas and water shut offs.
- To read, accept and practice the house guidelines, and the policy and procedure manuals.
- To record and read all information in the resident’s files and communications binders.
- To be responsible for financial record-keeping, accounting for petty and recreational cash and receipts.
- To ensure residents conduct weekly meetings, and assist them to keep meeting minutes of the meeting.
- To receive resident feedback, inquiries and complaints, respond and report the same to the supervisor or house administrator.
- Preforms outdoor maintenance on melody house property such as weeding, gardening, trash removal, shovelling snow, salting sidewalks and walkways, and any outdoor maintenance tasks.

**QUALIFICATIONS**
- Minimum grade 12 education
- Some Front line training/experience for people who have a mental illness in a

residential (preferred)
- TB test clearance
- Occupational First aid
- Food safe certificate

- Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others.
- Ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients.
- Ability to analyze and resolve problems.

**Job Types**: Permanent, Casual

Pay: $27.92-$29.60 per hour
