About this Role

Directions Youth Services is a division of Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV), which for more than 90 years has provided a variety of essential resources for children, families and individuals in the Greater Vancouver community. We believe in the resiliency of Vancouver’s youth who are at-risk, homeless, and street-involved. We assist youth under the age of 25 to get counselling for trauma, mental health or substance issues. Our teams strive to create spaces and build connections with youth who are facing challenges of street life, substance use, mental health concerns, and disconnection from their communities. Directions inclusive programs of shelter and drop-in, safe houses and other unique programs are committed to being a community leader in harm reduction work and fostering low-barrier spaces where all youth are welcome.

This is a volunteer opportunity for individuals that have experience working with youth at risk and feel comfortable working with youth independently. The person reports to the Food Program Supervisor. This position is meant to facilitate the use of the art room at Directions Youth Services.

**Work Shifts**: Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays between 4 pm - 8 pm

**Hours**:Between 8-4 pm

**Location**: Directions Youth Services

What you bring:
To provide mentorship and guidance in a variety of arts to “street-involved” youth from the Downtown South/Granville Street area. To facilitate a safe environment where youth can express themselves through art and nurture youth interests in different mediums of artistic expression.

**Volunteering Duties and Responsibilities**
- Facilitate art room operations
- Plan, organize and implement appropriate art-related educational activities
- Maintain art room equipment and inventories
- Maintain relevant documentation and timesheets
- Adhere to all program and agency policies, procedures, and safety standards; including but not limited to confidentiality policy. Also report concerns to DYCS staff in a timely manner; including legally required, reporting concerns: risk of harm to self or others and child protection concerns
- Model pro-social behavior for program participants
- Maintaining a culture of ‘People helping people help themselves
- Ensure open communication with program management

**Education, Training, Experience**
- Experience working with at-risk, street entrenched, and homeless youth
- Applicants with personal experience with addiction or street involvement require a minimum of two years clean/sober and away from services

**Knowledge, Skills, Abilities**
- Knowledge of adolescent development; alcohol and drug abuse issues; sexually exploited youth and “street-involved” activities
- Relevant arts and media skills
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients
- Ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients
- Ability to work in an inclusive and non-judgmental manner with clients

**Additional Requirements**
- Successful completion of criminal record check
- Successful completion of FIOPPA (Information Privacy & Security Training).
- **Proof of Covid-19 vaccination status will be required**
