**CROSSING GUARD (Shakespeare)**

**Position Overview**:
Under the supervision of the Township of Perth East (the “Township”), Municipal Clerk, the Crossing Guard is responsible to direct and supervise the movement of persons (as defined in the _Highway Traffic Act_) across a highway by creating necessary gaps in vehicular traffic, providing safe passage at a designated school crossing location, during specified hours and during school periods. School crossings and the use of Crossing Guards are intended to provide protection and enhanced safety for children where there is sufficient potential for conflict with motor vehicles.

**Responsibilities**:

- Safely guide pedestrians, especially children, across designated crosswalks
- Communicate with drivers to ensure they stop for pedestrians
- Follow traffic safety rules and regulations
- Maintain a friendly and professional demeanor while interacting with pedestrians and drivers
- Report any safety concerns or incidents to the appropriate authorities
- Ensures safety vest is worn and the hand held Stop Sign is used at all times
- Checks that warning lights and signs are working. Promptly reports all technical issues to the Municipal Clerk
- Uses sound judgement in providing a safe highway crossing
- Communicates with students, guardians and the public enroute to school.
- Reports any incidents or near misses to the Ontario Provincial Police (“OPP”) and informs Municipal Clerk.
- Promptly advises the Municipal Clerk in case of absence so that appropriate coverage can be arranged.
- All other duties as assigned.

**Experience/ Qualifications**:

- No prior experience required; must be at least 16 Years of Age or older
- Responsible, reliable and alert
- Must have excellent communication skills
- Ability to work well with children and the general public
- Must be reliable and punctual

**Working Conditions**:

- Working hours are Monday-Friday 8:30AM-9AM and 3:15PM-3:45PM (excluding holidays).
- Work regularly involves direct contact with the public to provide a service that is important to the operation of the Township.

Note: This position may require standing for long periods of time and working in various weather conditions with exposure to hazards such as traffic.

**Job Type**: Fixed term contract
Contract length: 10 months

**Salary**: $15.60-$18.24 per hour

- Monday to Friday
