**Job Overview**
Do you have extensive knowledge and experience in forestry, agriculture or the natural sciences sector? The Agroforestry & Woodlot Extension Society (AWES) is looking for two key members with a passion for Non-Profit to join our Society for Seasonal positions (May-Sept) as our Plant Survey and Assessment Technician(s). It is expected that these individual(s) will have experience in Alberta native trees/shrubs identification, soil classification, planting, various plant survey/survivability assessments, project coordination and engagement with external groups.
**A bit about us**
AWES is a growing environmental non-profit organization that provides direct assistance to landowners, municipalities, and organizations with funding or expertise on planting project design and implementation, tree health assessment, municipal policy guidance, restoration, bioengineering planning, source plant material, and the planting and maintenance of forested areas. Our planting projects extend across Alberta, and we promote community capacity building through training and workshops. AWES is helping communities and landowners make the most of their forests, large and small.
**Responsibilities**
The Plant Survey and Assessment Technician (PSAT) will work closely with both the Program Director and the Agroforestry Technician to assist in planning, developing materials for and executing planting projects on privately held land in Alberta’s white zone. The PSAT will engage with private landowners across Alberta in scheduling and implementing initial landowner consultations, planting projects, and monitoring. The PSAT will be responsible for data collection and reporting on a variety of project types. Additionally, the PSAT will collaborate with AWES partners and stakeholders within public, private, and non-governmental sectors and oversee contractors while in the field. The PSAT will ensure on-site, and reporting deliverables are being met for each project.
Working extended hours with AWES staff & contractors, as the Plant Survey and Assessment Technician, to deliver planting projects and field assessments, including but not limited to:
- supervision of planting contractors,
- assisting in site assessments,
- conducting survival assessments on planted seedlings,
- planting seedlings or cuttings,
- vegetation management,
- transporting seedlings and tree material (requiring a valid driver’s license)
- project assessments with villages, private land owners, and conservation associations utilizing insect and pest, tree, and weed identification skills.
- workshops & field days working with AWES staff and contractors to deliver guided walks, field days, demonstrations, and other educational content found in the field (or forest).
A portion of the non-field PSAT time will be spent on assisting in greenhouse operations, inventory management or site maintenance at our facility based in Edmonton. Other non-field tasks may include creation of Emergency Response Plans for upcoming travel, database queries or participation in workshops or AWES events or other miscellaneous administrative tasks.
**Qualifications**
- Has relevant post secondary schooling (diploma or Bachelor’s Degree)
- Experience working in or knowledge of agriculture, forestry, land management, or related natural sciences
- Experience in silvicultural surveying or tree health assessments are an asset
- Valid drivers license required
**Skills**
- Identification skills in tree/shrub, insect/pest, and weeds
- Effective writing, administration, and communication skills
- Technical writing and presentation delivery
- Organized and detail oriented
- Experience working with stakeholders exhibiting good interpersonal skills
- Must be physically capable of carrying 40 lbs and able to traverse uneven terrain carrying planting bags in inclement weather
- Experience with basic Google Suite, Google Earth Pro, or similar software
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Experience with Theodolite and Avenza an asset
The PSAT position will be primarily field based, with up to 90% of the work being conducted on day trips travelling out of Edmonton or on multi-day assignments staying in other locations across Alberta. All fieldwork will be mobilized out of our facilities at the Crop Diversification Centre North (CDCN) in Edmonton. Accommodations and per diems are paid for staff when working outside of Edmonton overnight.
