**Salary Range**: Commensurate with experience and education. **Who We Are**:
The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is an advocacy organization, taking direction and fulfilling mandates as directed by First Nations in-Assembly through resolutions. As a national advocacy organization for First Nations, the AFN seeks to advance First Nations Inherent and Treaty Rights through the development policy, public education and where applicable, the co-development of legislation to build First Nations capacity.

The AFN was created out of a desire among First Nations leadership for a strong and effective collective advocacy organization. From this, values such as respect for human rights, diversity, justice, and the sovereignty of each rights-holding First Nation guide the work of the organization.

**The Role**:
The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is seeking an experienced, highly skilled and highly motivated individual who will be responsible for gathering, researching, monitoring, analyzing and reporting on information relating to First Nations Income Assistance, First Nations poverty and poverty reduction tools, programs and efforts at all levels of government. The incumbent will be responsible for the achievement of defined work plans and objectives aimed at supporting and advancing AFN’s national advocacy positions, interests and strategies related to Social Development and Social Programs.

Reporting to the Director, Social Development, the Policy Analyst will have the following **key duties and responsibilities**:

- Conduct comprehensive research and analysis on First Nations Income Assistance and other Social Development programs and policies.
- Evaluate existing policies and regulations to identify gaps, inefficiencies and areas for improvement
- Collaborate with key partners, including First Nations Leadership, government officials and agencies, and community-based organizations, to gather insights and perspectives on priorities related to First Nations Income Assistance and Social Development programs and policies
- Develop evidence-based policy recommendations, briefing notes, speaking notes and reports for branch and sector leadership.
- Stay informed about current trends, best practices, latest developments and research findings related to First Nations Social Development programs and policies.
- Participate in policy advocacy efforts internally within the AFN at various working groups, and participation in external meetings.

**Qualifications**:

- An undergraduate degree in social sciences, economics, political science, or a related field of study with a minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience related to First Nations Social and Economic Development programs and/or poverty reduction
- Significant knowledge of poverty indicators and poverty reduction programs available to First Nations, policies, practices, and challenges.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of multidimensional poverty and the intersectionality of poverty with disability
- Knowledge and understanding of socials services and programs available to First Nations, including Income Assistance and the First Nations & Inuit Home and Community Care Assisted Living program.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the intersectionality of historical trauma, poverty, disability, race, gender, remoteness and socioeconomic factors in a First Nations context;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with attention to detail, and the ability to translate complex ideas and information to any audience;
- Demonstrated ability to understand and conduct research, analyze statistical data, and interpret and communicate findings in a clear and concise way to a variety of stakeholders;
- Demonstrated experience working with First Nations, federal, provincial, territorial, northern, urban and international governments and officials;
