**Position Overview**:
The Water treatment plant overall responsible operator monitor and operate computerized control systems and related equipment in water filtration and treatment plants to regulate the treatment and distribution of water. Wastewater plant overall responsible operators monitor and operate computerized control systems and related equipment in wastewater, sewage treatment and liquid waste plants to regulate the treatment and disposal of sewage and wastes. The overall responsible operator is employed by the Independent First Nations Alliance water and wastewater hub and reports to the Technical Services Manager.

**Responsibilities**:
**Water treatment plant overall responsible operators perform some or all the following duties**:

- Mentors staff in the operation and monitor computerized control systems and related equipment in water filtration and treatment plants to regulate the treatment and distribution of water
- Mentor staff in the monitoring and inspection of plant equipment and systems to detect equipment malfunctions and to ensure plant systems are operating normally
- Mentors staff in the reading of flow meters, gauges, and other recording instruments to measure water output and consumption levels, bacterial content, chlorine, and fluoride levels
- Mentors staff in the collection and testing of water samples for chemical and bacterial content, analyze test results, instrument readings, and adjust plant equipment and systems to ensure quality control
- Provide verbal or written instructions for process control changes to waterworks system to ensure water produced meets standardized quality requirements
- Mentors staff in the performance of security checks in plant and on grounds
- Respond to public enquiries regarding water quality issues and emergencies
- Mentors’ staff in the collection of water samples, test and analyze results and adjust plant equipment and systems as required
- May perform minor maintenance or assist skilled tradespersons with installation and repair of plant machinery
- May measure, mix, and transport chemicals to maintain feed stocks.

**Liquid waste plant overall responsible operators perform some or all the following duties**:

- Mentors staff in operating and monitoring computerized control systems and related equipment in wastewater treatment, sewage treatment and liquid waste plants to regulate the flow of sewage through settling, aeration, and digestion tanks, and to treat and dispose of sewage and wastes
- Mentors staff to patrol plants to check pumps, motors, filters, chlorinators, and other plant equipment; monitor and read gauges, meters, and other recording instruments to detect equipment malfunctions and ensure plant systems and equipment are operating within prescribed limits
- Mentors staff in testing and adjust chemical feed rates to ensure that disinfection processes meet quality standards
- Mentors staff in the collection of waste and sewage samples, test and analyze results and adjust plant equipment and systems as required
- Mentors staff in the performance of security checks in plant and on grounds
- Mentors staff in the completion and maintenance of plant logs and reports
- Mentors staff in the performance of preventive maintenance on plant equipment to ensure that the facility operates in accordance with required standards
- May assist skilled tradespersons with installation and repair of plant machinery.

**Position Requirements**:

- Completion of secondary school
- Certification in water treatment and distribution (Levels I, II, III or IV depending on the certification level of the plant) is required for water treatment plant overall responsible operators.
- Certification in wastewater collection and wastewater treatment (Level I, II, III or IV depending on certification level of the plant) is required for wastewater treatment plant overall responsible operators.
- Certification in workplace hazardous materials information system (WHMIS), transportation of dangerous goods (TDG), and courses in safety practices may be required.
- Previous experience as a worker in the water treatment or wastewater field may be required.

**Additional suggested assets**:

- A good understanding of the culture and the language is a definite asset
- Familiarity with the independent First Nations alliance First Nations is also an asset
- A working knowledge of Microsoft office
- A valid Ontario driver’s license
- Willingness to travel within Ontario
- Teaching skills

Salary will be based on a combination of qualifications and experience.
