Under the general supervision of the Victim Services Patrol Sergeant, the Victim Services Section (VSS) Social Worker provides support, information and referral to individuals, families, and groups impacted by crime and tragedy within the City of Winnipeg. Provides comprehensive training within the Winnipeg Police Service to community and professional groups with regard to victim needs and issues. On behalf of the Winnipeg Police Service, the VSS Social Worker serves as a representative, contact person, liaison with agencies and media outlets, as well as community and professional groups.

**As the Social Worker - Victim Services Unit** **you will**:

- Follow up/contact individuals and families impacted by crime
- Review and determine follow-up for serious/high profile/sensitive police incidents
- Train and supervise Volunteer Caseworkers
- Oversee internal and external training and education
- Act as a representative for the Winnipeg Police Service, the Victim Service Section and victims on internal and community committees/boards. Liaise and collaborate with external agencies
- Train and supervise Social Work practicum students
- Other duties as assigned

**Your education and qualifications include**:

- Grade 12 Diploma, GED Certificate, or equivalent
- Bachelor of Social Work
- Registered with the Manitoba College of Social Workers, possess valid Certificate of Practice
- 5 years Social Work experience
- Advanced Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Course, an asset
- Demonstrated excellent communication skills, verbally and written, including presentation skills
- Ability to communicate in both English and French, an asset
- Proficient standard level computer program skills
- Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of individuals under varying circumstances
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills
- Extensive knowledge regarding trauma and critical incident stress
- Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System
- Knowledge of legislation relating to victims, including Victim Impact Statements and the Victim Bill of Rights
- Ability to work effectively under pressure
- Ability to assess a situation, gather relevant information and make decisions quickly
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain paper/electronic record/filing and retrieval system
- Strong ability to multi-task
- The ability to establish and maintain a positive, respectful, safe and healthy work environment that supports the physical, psychological, and social working relationships with staff at all levels in a team environment

**Conditions of Employment**:

- Ability to pass a level 3 Winnipeg Police Service security check and maintain clearance
- Possess Valid Class 5 Drivers License
- Ability to successfully complete additional training as defined by the Service
