Associate Counsel

Job Summary:
**Duties**:
- You would step into my practice as small town family lawyer at a small but busy law firm. Our office is in Lower Gibsons next to the marina. You could start in late September/early October when I'm expecting to begin maternity leave with a full caseload or earlier if a soft-start is manageable for you. We always seem to have more work than we can take on but if you coordinate your start with my departure, you'll be hitting the ground running.
- The majority of our work is family law and at least half of it is litigation - we focus on alternate dispute resolution but often court intervention is required. Some experience in BC Supreme Court and Provincial Court is required but we're prepared to take on someone fairly junior.
- If you are interested in doing some residential real estate work, that's also a possibility.
- Family legal aid work is readily available to fill any gaps in private work but on the whole I don't find it necessary to take on much legal aid work.
- If you have other practice areas that you're interested in (criminal defense or personal injury e.g.) those would be a good fit for our firm as well.
Experience
- You should be qualified to practice law in BC and have some experience as a family lawyer.
The compensation is a competitive fee split. We have good health benefits and Gibsons is a gorgeous and (somewhat) affordable place to live. We have a fantastic legal assistant and a junior lawyer who is primarily managing the estate component of the practice. If you live in the Lower Mainland, this is a commutable distance and you could try out the job during my maternity leave and we could decide in the new year if you'd like to stay on and consider relocating to Gibsons.
This would be a good fit for someone who is sensitive to the fact that a small community has a different practice culture than the city. We focus our practice of family law on diffusing conflict and drama and supporting our clients to navigate challenging transitions in their lives gracefully. I'll be around to supervise you and manage the firm and staff throughout my leave. Please have a good sense of humour.
