
Housing Support Worker

**Job Overview**
We are seeking a dedicated Housing Support Worker to join our team. Under the supervision of the Housing Team Lead, the Housing Support Worker will work collaboratively as a part of a team of professionals to provide meaningful, high quality, and comprehensive 24/7 support to individuals exiting homelessness. While focusing on developing meaningful, therapeutic relationships, housing support staff will engage with each individual and support their individual goals, aiming to promote individual wellness and housing retention. The Housing Support Worker is responsible for creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all residents, whilst maintaining a safe and secure living environment. This position requires respect for, and expertise working with, residents who are facing mental health issues, addictions, abuse and social isolation. The Support Worker will assist individuals in need by providing emotional support, guidance, and practical help.
**Duties**
- Offer emotional support and companionship to individuals;
- Provide guidance and encouragement to individuals in achieving their goals;
- Maintain accurate records of interactions and activities;
- Assist in maintaining housing stability of individuals in need of higher levels of support in order to retain housing;
- Assist in the development of life skills including but not limited to cooking, cleaning, medication management, budgeting, etc. that reduce the risk of return to homelessness;
- Maintain working knowledge of relevant community resources and supports, and make referrals and connections for clients as needed;
- Greet and direct residents, guests, and contractors to the site as needed;
- Handle resident complaints and issues, de-escalating the potential for conflict and working with residents to develop crisis management skills;
- Provide maintenance requests from the residents to the appropriate property management staff;
- Monitor activities in and around the building via video surveillance;
- Educate tenants about their tenancy responsibilities and their on-going responsibilities to maintain their housing;
- Creatively problem-solve housing related issues such as behavior, social isolation, mental health, guest management, substance use and hygiene by encouraging tenants and supporting them in accessing Salvus and other community resources;
- Support tenants in remembering important appointments, maintaining appropriate medication routines, establishing personal wellness routines, meal planning, cooking, cleaning, community orientation, etc.;
- Cleaning common areas such as common rooms/lounges, building exterior space area as scheduled, or, as required;
- Continually assessing the environment for safety and security issues and recommending action to address any deficiencies;
- Assist in planning and facilitating group activities/events which foster client engagement & participation;
- Collaborate with other support workers and professionals;
**Qualifications**
- Individuals from a wide variety of educational or lived experience backgrounds are encouraged to apply;
- Experience with and/or lived experience with marginalized populations with the ability to empathize with a wide variety of challenging experiences in a caring, non-judgmental manner;
- Familiarity with the Recovery Model of Care and Trauma-Informed Care;
- Ability to work independently, interdependently and co-operatively in a busy multi-disciplinary situation;
- Direct experience or in-depth knowledge of the social determinants of health and the housing first model;
- Passion for working in a housing setting providing services that are eviction prevention and harm reduction focused;
- Solid knowledge, sensitivity, and/or lived experience relating to the issues of mental health and addictions;
- Highly developed understanding of and proven ability to communicate appropriate professional boundaries;
- Excellent interpersonal/communication/listening skills with motivational interviewing skills;
- Ability to meet the physical challenges required by the job;
- A car and valid driver's license is considered an asset and for some positions is a requirement;
- A satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Social Development Record Check;
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Suicide Intervention, Mental Health First Aid, Motivational Interviewing, and CPR/First Aid training an asset. Training will be provided as needed;
- Willingness to learn and adapt to the needs of the individuals being supported.
**Working Conditions**
- As the site is a 24-hour operational facility, staff may occasionally be required to cover shifts in emergency situations, including overnights;
- There is a likelihood of exposure to unpredictable behavior, unpleasant odors, bodily fluids and pests including bedbugs, mice, etc.
- This is stressful and emotionally challenging work that deals with vicarious trauma, grief, and compassion fatigue on a regular basis;
