The Manitoba Geological Survey, Resource Development Division facilitates sustainable development of the province’s mineral, petroleum and pore-space resources. The Geological Survey Branch conducts a wide range of investigations, which include the examination of exposed bedrock, subsurface materials, and surficial sediments including sand, gravel and organic deposits throughout Manitoba. The branch provides data and products, such as geological maps and reports, metallic and industrial mineral deposit reports and databases, mineral resource assessments, targeted geoscience research, development of exploration models, and maintenance of data inventories. By developing an understanding of Manitoba's geology and geological processes, the Geological Survey Branch promotes mineral exploration opportunities and contributes to wise land-use management.

Conditions of Employment:

- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Valid Manitoba Class 5 driver’s license.
- Registered with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (EGM) as a Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) or Geoscientist-in-Training (GIT), or the equivalent, transferable professional designation from another Canadian regulator.
- Able to visually identify colours of rocks in hand sample and thin section.

Qualifications:
Essential:

- Undergraduate degree in geology (B.Sc.) and Masters degree (M. Sc.) in geology; with specialization in sedimentary geology preferred.
- Experience working in the Phanerozoic geology and stratigraphy of the Williston Basin
- Experience logging drillcore, and correlating, reading and interpreting geophysical wireline logs, and doing field investigations/mapping.
- Experience using ESRI ArcMap and/or integrated GIS-based software (e.g. geoSCOUT).
- Strong oral communication skills, and comfortable presenting technical information to diverse audiences, including the general public.
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to present ideas and information clearly and concisely.
- Effective organizational skills and ability to independently prioritize work to meet multiple deadlines and priorities while maintaining good attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work efficiently with the public and staff.

Desired:

- Experience or well developed knowledge of industrial minerals, with a focus on sedimentary rocks.
- Knowledge in areas such as geophysical exploration, interpretation of logs, familiarity with coring, sampling, and drilling, geologic modelling, and GIS.
- Experience in working in the sedimentary geology and/or stratigraphy of the Hudson Bay Basin.

**Duties**:
This is a professional geoscience position that is responsible for industrial mineral investigations, with particular focus on sedimentary rock-hosted commodities, for the Manitoba Geological Survey, as well as liaison with other agencies active in these areas, and with Provincial and State agencies of adjacent areas. Work involves project management, surface and subsurface mapping, general geoscientific studies, compilation and tracking of provincial industrial minerals operations, as well as laboratory studies, and preparation of summarizing geologic reports and field trip guidebooks. Recommends all measures necessary to provide industrial mineral information for resource utilization, and issues related to land use in accordance with government initiatives.
